When and for what do you all vaccinate your cats. We have a kitten that is about ready to be spaid, but I have to do rabies with her before I can do that.
Do you all do any other vaccines for cats?
I am also wondering where those of us with both cats and dogs feed their cats.
I keep their bowl full all the time because otherwise I worry the oldest would not get her fair share.
And also because they are more stubborn and persistent than I am and freak out if the bowl is more than half empty. This means that I have to feed them up high.
With my cats I only do the feline rhinotracheitis/calici virus, Feline leukemia every five years and rabies every three years (the law). I have them give the injection in the back leg Just In Case. There have been severe reactions to the Felv vaccine including sarcomas. You can also get the respiratory vaccine given intranasally. Is your cat strictly an indoor cat?
She goes outside in the backyard, but only when we are out there too and thus far she has not shown any interest in leaving the porch. I have bought a tiny little harness to try and train her with.
My other cat is indoor/outdoor, but nearly all indoor now (she still slips out from time to time.)
I have 8 cats and don't vaccinate any of them. They are indoor 99% of the time. On occasion I let them out but they stay in my front yard and are out no longer than 30 minutes.
I feed my dogs in the backyard and my cats in the garage.
Seeing that you "keep their bowl full all the time" threw up a red flag for me because I'm a volunteer for a cat rescue group and see many problems with cats who are free-fed dry food. I'm not sure that is what you're feeding. If you're interested please check out catinfo.org for some great cat diet advice.
I know you didn't ask but my cats rarely get dry food. I'd feed raw if I didn't have so many.
My cats are indoor cats and I do not vaccinate them. And they have become accustomed to eating only twice a day - they get about 20-30 minutes to eat and then I pull it until next feeding.
Tula Belle did take a little longer to adjust but I think that is just her personality. Oh I do have a cat question..small one..not to take over the thread but not really big enough I dont think to start a new thread. My male Turbo has been really testing Tula Belle lately. She is/has been by far the dominant cat. He will walk away from food/water bowl when she comes up etc. But it seems like he is trying really hard to take over?

I never vaccinate any of my barn cats and they are always healthy.
They eat the same raw meat (plus some rodent and bird) as the dogs. I throw pieces (saves my fingers) to them at feeding time or they chew it off of the carcass I am butchering.
Dry food can cause chronic dehydration and kidney problems. Tell your older cat to "get a life" when she complains about the half bowl of food left out (which is also very good coon and possum bait).

This is sooo true and bears repeating.
My cat died of kidney disease brought on by a lifetime of dry food. It was horrible, and he suffered. I will never feed a cat dry food again. Not to mention it is horrible on their teeth, and bad teeth are extremely difficult in cats - they often don't let you look in their mouths, much less brush their teeth, and don't show signs when they are in pain from tooth decay or abscess. Tell your cat to get over it. Dry food isn't good for her! If you worry about her getting enough, feed the cats separately.
My cat was an indoor cat but would get out (going through screens sometimes) to fight other cats. He had all his shots annually until he was around 7, and then none until he passed away at 15. (I stopped when I found out about vaccine-induced cancer in cats). Also rabies vaccines are not mandatory here for cats. My next cat will get a round of everything, and then I will probably not vaccinate again.
Thank you for all the input on the shots, My other cats were adopted from rescues and came with all of their shots already done so I have not had to deal with it with them.
Fluff is 13 and had all her kitten shots but nothing in the last 8 years or so. You would never know she was 13, she just happens to be horribly neurotic about certain things.
Big Kitty had his kitten shots as well and came neutered and I have not done any other shots with him at this point.
I know I need to be tougher with her about the dry food issue. She doesn't really even eat that much of it.
It is tough though when she is literally throwing herself at my feet and howling about not having any food in the bowl.
