Here is the story on her.
She was sold as a puppy 8 weeks old to a lady here in the town where I live.
The dog comes from pretty drivy working lines and in her direct line has Dobs that are working in bite sports like Schutzhund, active duty Police K9s that do protection and search and rescue.
She shows very good prey drive and will try to do back flips for food. She responds very fast to marker training. But, also needs a firm voice and steady hand, because....
for 8 months she ran the house she lived in.
And when I say ran the house, this dog was the boss. The lady that had her has 3 kids and works full time. The dog had free rome and control over the other animals in the house like cats, and most of all food.
Great dog, awesome learner, very willing to please my wife and I. But, ran all over her last owner.
So, when I went to see the dog, I worked with her a bit. I saw very good potential in the dog, but I also saw a dog with no manners, and that honestly was out of control.
With-in a few minutes I had her responding to me and it was getting better every couple of minutes. I was happy to see this.
I offered to train the dog for the lady with OB for a small fee. I am a sucker for Dobs. My grandmother has had them my whole life, and even at 72 years old still has one.
She told me "thanks", but I just don't have the time, or the drive to work her. I can understand that, being a mother with 3 kids.
She told me a lot of the common stuff you hear in cases like this. I cant believe the dog is so hyper, hard headed, willful ect.ect. I explained to her that when she bought a working bred dob, she got what she paid for, but the dog is not been worked with and needs to be, that and the dog is the boss in this house and that is a no no, with any dog. But, with a dog like this it is a NOO NOOO!
So, she told me I could take the dog if I would be willing to put some training into it.
So, I ended up with the dog, out door run 20x15. In-door crate, 3 bowls and some leads and collars.
All just to pretty much get the dog out of her hair.
After taking the dog out of her old house, I realized a few things. One, was that I saw an instant turn around in her behavior. Two, was that oddly enough she did not know her name at all! I could not believe it to be honest. So, my wife said, lets rename her, So she named her Himmel, that is German for heaven and she responded to it almost instantly.
The rest is pretty much history. She is worked everyday by me and I take her once a week to a family friend of ours that owns a Schutzhund club.
I plan on doing some competitive OB with her. Agility and sent detect.
If she prove to be solid in the long run I will do some personal protection and maybe some bite sport work on her. She is my wife's dog and is here for her peace of mind at night. We live in a small town of 160 people and believe it or not have 3 sex offenders here and 1 of the 3 is violent. I did not know that when we moved here sadly enough. =(
She is 9 months old now and 53 pounds.
Sorry I got so long winded.
David.
