Capone has been on Novox. Which I just realized is generic for Rimadyl. Someone mentioned Metacam instead. I am about to do my re fill request on 1800petmeds and want to know if I should request Metacam instead or if there is something else that would be even better?
TIA!

im going to play devil's advocate here.
I know that Rimadyl has a bad rap, but i also know that when my last dog was suffering horribly from arthritis, it was the only thing that helped him.
I knew the risks, and the vet was very up front with me about them and we took every percaution when using Rimadyl on Taz. Including frequent blood work to make sure his kidneys and other organs were not being effected.
The Rimadyl had no side effects on Taz, except to allow him more freedom & movement and much less pain the last 2 years of his life.
I tried Metacam & Torodol with him, neither of them had the effect that the Rimadyl did.
It's like any other medication out there. It depends on who's taking it and how their body processes the drug if any negative side effects will be seen.
I used the lowest dose I could, and did not over use it. i also gradually put Taz on the dose over time so that we could judge if he was going to be able to process it properly, and if he couldn't and there were negative side effects, we had a better chance of him recovering from them because the dose was low.
Im not advocating it's use, because i know that it's frowned upon in this forum. But with diligent vet visits to ensure it's not effecting his organs i think it can be helpful in some painful situations.

You are 100% correct, of course, and also about which one might help most.
In the link I posted above, I said:
"I should add that even Rimadyl's adverse reaction percentage is probably way under one percent. Also, some individual dogs appear to have much stronger benefits from Rimadyl than other NSAIDs."
Similarly, my senior who is on Deramaxx (Deracoxib) has better relief than he did with Metacam.
And of course he too had pre-tests and he has blood-work every 4 months. And yes, I would not have been able to keep this happy senior dog alive without the NSAID.

hmmm...never heard of deramaxx.
i apologize because i didn't read the whole thread in the link Connie...my bad.
but i sometimes think people get scared away from rimadyl not realizing that if Monitored and you & your vet are on the same page, that it can bring huge relief to some ailments.
I would of course suggest trying the other Meds first, and if you get a good result with them of course stick with them. But don't shy away from Rimadyl too quickly. If the others aren't helping it could be a consideration. I just didn't see any pain relief with the others, and when your frosty muzzled guy has an accident at the bottom of the stairs because he couldn't take the pain trying to go up the stairs you will sometimes try anything!
yes, I was a regular visitor to the vets when Taz was on the rimadyl. My vet was great though, he would only charge me the cost of the blood work, not the visit etc etc.

No, I'm glad you posted, because although I am CERTAIN that no one here EVER NOTICED this, I can be bossy and pedantic. I lay it all at the feet of being the eldest of seven (and being old).

Yes. My whole thing really is to be informed. NSAIDs are not advised about properly in too many practices.

Mine is too. I always schedule it when something else is happening with one dog or another and then I'm kinda sorta paying for the exam room anyway, but I still appreciate that I never see anything but the lab charge for those re-tests.

I'm not familiar with these new NSAIDS, other than having bought a 2 month's supply for my 25lb pup who was having neck issues. I thought it was incredibly expensive.

Thanks for all of the input! My vet never mentioned blood tests!
Add just have to call myself out, I realize I spelled medicine wrong. I was in a rush, what a dummy!
