this is something I have read in lots of posts, new and really old, when we had a tail chasing thing start this spring , someone else was posting on that problem as well, we upped exercise and it stopped.
any way, guestion I'm pondering is what about the joints in our pups, dosen't the most damage occure when their muscles are tired and can't hold the bones as tight in their sockets,
or is it an accaptable risk to avoid a mental problem(tail chasing, body chewing ect. ect.)
I don't like exercising puppies in that manner for precisely the reasons you state. And the fact that with young energetic dogs exercising just seems to build endurance
IMO, moderate physical exercise along with plenty of mental exercise is a much better way to go.
Nose work, trick training, OB training are all great ways to exercise a growing dog AND that mental work tires them out pretty well! I also like having good quiet activities for them such as recreational bones and stuffed kongs.
Puppies get tired with a lot of things. When Ryuk was a puppy I had a few sessions a day of play and some OB (tossing toys, making him work for treats and play time) then I would simply bring him everywhere. We'd walk down town, we'd walk on campus, I'd bring him to the pet store for OB (obviously as an older puppy)...we were actually going very far but the excitement was very tiring....
by the end of the day he'd be dead to the world on his pillow, just as tired as he'd be if I worked him into the ground but with none of the stress and at the end of the day he wouldn't have enough energy to be an obnoxious puppy (whining, licking, chewing, chasing his tail)
