Amber and I are still working on "listening ears," so would anyone be bothered if we chose a small goal? This would be good for me to get back in the mode of everyday training. Any ideas on how we should choose a goal?

In fact, Jodi, the very improvement from "not paying attention" to "listening and doing" is a huge payoff with marker training.
It's part of your work for the contest, in the case of a dog who isn't yet easy to engage.
So part of your stated goal (part of what you would be judged on) would be that.
This is a big chunk of what allows the judges to judge more complex behaviors against very basic ones .... because the judging is about the distance you had to cover and how well you did it.

* I like this to give the dog something to do instead of just flip out, so she has to find you and give a trained response to get to a reward, instead of self satisfying by being a nut.
And my entry.... (if I was able to enter that is)
Spin in circles when the Nestle Tollhouse cookies are just ready to come out of the oven (you know how they smell at just the right moment...)
I just re-read this and realized it doesn't read as intended. Should have said: "great suggestions, thanks for the ideas."
Sorry for any misunderstanding.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
