Vote Aug.4 CA ear crop ban
Greetings!
The time is drawing short here for us in CA to have an impact on this bill which threatens the rights of all of us in CA and ultimately all of you in this country. Please take a moment today to send an email or letter to each of the assemblyman listed below and if you do not live in CA, please tell them how this could effect your ability to show here in our state or with our handlers in the future. Everyone's help is needed.
It took me approximately ten minutes to cut and paste the letter below and send it to each of the following assemblymen. TEN MINUTES is all I'm asking of your time, and ultimately, whether or not you are directly affected by this law now, as more and more of these animal rights laws are passed, you will indeed be affected at some point in time if we don't stop this now.
What will be next? Spaying and neutering? Think on it. Its much more invasive and purely ELECTIVE in 99.999% of the cases.
Please, please, please ask everyone you know to write even if they don't have a cropped breed. Each and every letter, email, and call will help!
Thank you.

Re: SB 1548 (Figueroa), As Amended July 2, 2004. Position: Oppose Unless Amended Assembly Appropriations Committee Hearing Date: August 4, 2004
Dear Honorable Governor Schwarzenegger and Senators:
SB 1548, authored by Senator Liz Figueroa, contains a provision to ban ear cropping in the state of California. This small addition by Senator Figueroa was literally placed at the end of her proposal and was not even read aloud as it was introduced. This provision has a severe and immediate effect to the thousands of residents of California owning or wishing to own, any of the American Kennel Clubs (AKC) recognized 16 historically, and customarily, cropped Breeds, and will have a cascading effect of similar legislation spreading nationwide should it pass in such an influential state. Please know that one of the listed sponsors of this proposal according to:
http://www.legalinfo.ca.gov is: The Fund for Animals, a radical animal rights group directly connected to PETA. I am sure you are aware that attempts made by groups like this increase government spending by cluttering and slowing the legislative process, and would significantly add to California's financial burden to regulate, enforce, and protect itself from the challenges in a court, which would undoubtedly follow.
I am also writing to advise you of the potential negative economic impact SB1548 could have on your district constituents. Many of your district cities host AKC Licensed Dog Shows. Dog Shows are often a sport enjoyed by entire families and are so organized and regulated by the AKC, they also provide full time employment for thousands. Currently, 1/3 of ALL AKC recognized breeds are cropped. Approximately 50% of the entries at these canine events are cropped dogs. If SB 1548 passes, all of these dogs and the people who own, show, and travel with them could be adversely affected while in the State of California. This could represent a significant negative impact in terms of the revenue generated for your district by dog shows. Another concern is that SB1548 creates an unfunded mandate of enforcement, which will fall on cities/counties as an additional financial burden. The effect of SB 1548 will drive barely profitable show-giving-clubs - which are all of them - into unprofitibility. The profit margins for dog clubs are so small now that the clubs in California cannot afford to lose entries. The effect of this bill will be the nail in the coffin, as more and more breeds are affected. First cropped breeds, then followed up by docked breeds. (There are about 48 such breeds.) As more people leave the sport because of the actual effect of SB1548, as well as the perception that the state is hostile to pure-bred dogs, the show-giving clubs in California will no longer be able to provide to the local communities the AKC dog shows that have been held there for almost a century.
Revenue Statistics:
48 AKC recognized breeds are cropped/docked
50% of dog show entrants are cropped (even more are cropped/docked)
In 2002, CA hosted 1,382 AKC licensed dog shows
Average number of entries was 2,000
An American Kennel Club analysis reveals the total impact of shows to the local economy to be an average of $300,000 for each show. (Many clubs have more than one show per year.) CA has 4 shows ranked in the top 25 Conformation-Only category. Two of those being #1 (dogs entered 3,393), and #2 (dogs entered 3,164), the other two are #14 (dogs entered 2,699), and #21 (dogs entered 2,548). (FYI: Westminster the most watched and known show ranks in at a mere #82.). CA leads the states in rankings for the amount of shows held. Total Shows in CA for 2002 = 1,382 x $300,000.00 (avg. to local economy) = $414,600,000.00 into the State's economy. The passage of SB1548, unless amended, will remove a significant portion of that income from our state. If SB 1548 passes, income generated from dog events held in your district could be cut approximately in half. For small communities, this loss of income could be potentially devastating. This decrease will affect hotels, motels, fairgrounds income, vendor sales, local restaurants, community shopping, convenience stores, gas stations, etc.
I ask that you amend SB 1548 to exclude the ear crop provision, or oppose the bill. SB1548 is scheduled to be heard by the Assembly Appropriations Committee on August 4, 2004.
Respectfully,
