Ok guys and gals,
I just purchased a eight week old gsd. I took him out this morning to do what dogs do, and when he took a dump he turned around and took a bite of it. I just got rid of a gsd that did this reeeeeal bad. DISGUSTING. This puppy came from a top breeder. I NEED HELP. PLEEEEASE. I KNOW YOU GUYS AND GALS CAN GIVE ME SOME ANSWERS.
Mossyback - doesn't it make you just want to hurl?
- could be diet if what he is being fed comes out not totally digested and still smells like food. I would try and distract him and move him away as soon as he dumps so he doesn't develop the habit of "cleaning up after himself". Maybe a squirt of vinegar on the dump itself so it is less appetizing. I wouldn't use any verbal reprimanding cause you don't want him to think that he is being corrected for eliminating in the right place. Some puppies will eat anything at this age and will just grow out of it. There are products for this like "forbid" and I have seen
monosdium glutatamate (MSG) advised. I wouldn't use them on a puppy though and would go for the distraction etc route first.
They sell products that make the dogs waste taste bad, so they'll stop wanting to eat it. Drs. Foster & Smith sells several different types of these products.
I'm hoping you did not 'get rid' of your previous GSD just for eating it's own shit. Every young puppy I have ever been around has eaten it's own crap at one point or another...it doesn't mean they are defective. As soon as it goes, distract him, pick him up or keep him on leash and walk him away from it...or stand there w/ a pooper-scooper and scoop it up as soon as he goes. It's really a minor issue in the whole scheme of things...
Yes, even my mature, sophisticated, haute cuisine dog did several disgusting things when he was a pup. That included! Yuck!
At this age shouldn't the dog be going on a leash while you teach an elimination command such as "Do Duties" or "Go Potty", etc.? Also it's really just a matter of scooping fast, as some of the others have mentioned.
When I see them eating shit, rocks, dirt etc....
I always first suspect that the dog is not getting a full
compliment of trace minerals. This can happen because the diet is too low in minerals- or there may be enough but the dog is not fully digesting/assimilating enough of them the first time through. I would try adding a pinch of kelp (or another good source of TM's) to the diet once or twice a week.

Okay, that's it...the next puppy that comes to my house I am shipping off to your house for a 'test-drive'
