OK...this is why I *never* trust the Media about *anything*. Here's a clip from some famous reporter from Dallas covering the situation regarding stray dogs in NO after the storm. The police are apparently shooting some of the wilder dogs that are eating the dead bodies, etc. or out of self defense. But that's not a good enough story, so let's inject some Media bias to make a better story.....
Mr. Moron Reporter complains through out the video clip about the police "shooting dogs" but for some reason he can't actually get it on film. Every gunshot that's heard is immediately explained as a dog being shot with no prove of the statement. The reporter tells the Military folks that the police are shooting dogs, but you can pretty much see that they don't believe the reporters.
And this photo guy is literally world famous, yet he just can't manage to get any proof on film of his claims. The best that he can do is to film some live barking aggressive dogs and then switch to an interview with an LEO that says that they had to shot dogs out of self defense ( and the barking dog clip before hand is of course to lead the viewers into thinking that those dogs were shot ). And there's a clip of a truck next to a dead dog, which the reporter says that they shot. I don't see the guys holding any firearms, and for all we know, the dog has been dead for days.
I remember when reporters use to actually report the news instead of trying to just push an agenda by exaggerating the situation and offering no proof for their claims.
Not only did they not generate the news in the past, but news stories were not a sales pitch to watch their evening report.
Long lost are the days of the "News Brief". Now every story talked about during the regular programing throughout the day is a news commerical. "Tune in at 11:00 and we'll have the exlusive story on Yadda yadda yadda. . .ONLY HERE ON NEWS CHANNEL 8."
It's irresponsible, it's repugnant, and it's not likely to change till we stop watching completely.
I *wish* I had saved the article that I read a few years back. Seems there was a golden retriever that was a real menace to some children. Mom repeatedly called animal control because the dog was "snapping". No response. She was savy enough to call back and say it was a "pit bull" in her yard that was snapping at her children. I'm not kidding she had a news team at her door. Media bias??!
The media always seems to sensationalize and does little to rationalize. Let's take this one step further, lets just say the Police are shooting dogs. It is a far better death than starvation.
New Orleans is being evacuated and if you've ever survived a major hurricane with major flooding, food is scarce for all, animals and people.
There are animal groups going in to help with the animal situation (ie: http://www.workingdogs.com have a charity posted) and this is a good thing. Even then, they can't save them all.
After our event a year ago, one of my many concerns was the stray dogs, cats and livestock. Many animals were abandoned by their owners who left Island (or displaced after surviving being washed out of their homes) and forced to wander the streets. There wasn't a green thing left here after being flooded and blasted with salt for two days. It was upsetting to see obviously well-cared dogs walking around in shock(and unable to help due to the other pressures of duty). And believe me, people are not the only creatures to suffer from a traumatic event.
We are eternally grateful for our Humane Society and S.N.A.P. for assisting in collecting these animals and flying them off the Island to new homes. The unsuitable or ill animals were euthanized.
It is easy to lay blame and make assumptions reporting from the scene and then go sit in the comfort of an air-conditioned room with a hot shower and meal. Heck, maybe these guys are 'roughing' it for a couple of days. My heart bleeds. And those that jump on that band-wagon don't know what it is to go without and usually have their head comfortably on their pillow at 3:00 in the morning.
Dealing with situations as presented there and then is a constant reality facing the Police and Military in the Hurricane ravaged areas. And they are doing a fine job! Kudos to them!
I sympathize with the dogs in NO as much as any animal lover, but as far as shooting dogs in NO, there will be times when you have to be cruel to be kind.
