My Gsd's are all on Sentinel which is supposed to protect against ring but it never fails everytime we go to the vet, one of my dogs always has ringworm. I live in a fairly isolated ares (ie there aren't a lot of other dogs around, but there are other critterssuch as skunks, raccoons, cows, and rabbits). My vet suggested that I treat my yard with lime (?). I did and have continued treating my kennels with a lime water mixture. But when we went back to the vet a month ago, one of my dogs had to be treated for the persistent parasite yet again. Any tips on how to annihilate this irritating houseguest once and for all? We will be eternally grateful if someone can help solve this dilemma.
And yes I do give the Sentinel at the same time every month, not necessarily the same time of day but always on the first.
Renee If your dogs have hookworms they will start losing a little weight, they will shed more than usual and there skin possibly get dry. These are somtimes tell-tale signs that your dog has hookworms. Dogs can get hookworms from many areas,In the northern part of the country the birds are returning there droppings will have them and the dog can just walk through them and they will be on his pads of his feet, also you mentioned rabbits he will pick them up even if they smell their droppings. They can also get them from other dogs that are infected with it and your dogs like all others smell there poop. My rottie got them also and this is what my vet told me. Hope this will help you!
Thank you Rottie man. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the rabbits? At this time of year is there any way to tell if they are shedding too much. I get a small poodle off each of them every time I brush them.
Thank you for the suggestion VVG, my dogs stay on their heartworm preventative (Sentinal)year round. Here in Louisiana we don't believe in winter.
hi,
my youngest GSD zena had a case of roundworms (no they are not round, they look like spaghetti). when we first started her on heartworm preventative we used sentinel (which we had never used before...we always used heartgard plus with our previous dogs). she had been dewormed from the get go, but still had the lingering ones in her system. well, we started her on the heartgard plus and BOOM! no more roundworms.
i don't know how long your pups have been on sentinel, but maybe you could try the heartgard plus instead.
also, clean up the area they poop in immediatly after they do their business because from what i've read and been told the worms get into the soil.
if it's ringworm then it's on the skin and selson blue over the counter shampoo works great.
if it's a severe case then the pup will need to be on an antibiotic. i know all this because zeus had ringworm when we got him. and of course, my kids and i got it too....it is highly contagious.
Renee, I would suggest since you have rabbit problems i would suggest taking a stool sample to your vet once a month for a few months just to check for hookworms. Also, its a BALMY! 41 degrees today in Northern Penna!!!
2 GSD's Thanks for the suggestions, but alas my babies have been on Sentinel for most of their 2 years.
Rottieman I'm afraid that I may have to start taking the samples to the vet, but with me working full time 35 miles from home M-F and my vet being only 10 miles from the house, getting fresh poop to the vet is going to be a real trick. I'm not about to leave it in the car for the 8 hours I'm at work I don't think my vet would like me much anymore!!!!!!! Thank you for all your help. It is much appreciated.
