Obviously dog aggression isn't breed specific. The problem with many terriers is a physical correction often times will do nothing but creat more challenge for the dog. Just fire it up. I've seen terriers choked out and just return to whaterver they were trying to go after as soon as the get their thoughts together. I've lived with multiple terriers. When the $#!+ hits the fan, all pack order goes out the window. Even the lowest dog on the ladder will happily join in the fray.
My 12 yr old JRT is no longer top dog in the house but because of his "fire in the hole" nature I can't leave him out with my GSDs un attended. He'll stick to me like glue when we're out together but any stare form my adult GSD will cause the little bassad to go flying in his face. He's afraid of the GSD BUT his natural instincts are to turn aggressive under stress.
Stubborn really is a human trait. Terriers don't have the same pack mentality that many other breeds do. The don't sit back and wait for the farmer to "get the cows". They don't go in the ground and face off with a fox and wait for the terrierman to tell them what to do. You can't even "teach" them to do this. They are a purely instinctive breed.
Without excellent pack leadership, terriers WILL dominate their owners. With that leadership, the corrections can be made but the owner needs to stay calm with doing it, yet don't go at it half a$$ed.
We've all talked about the dangers and how wrong dominant pinning a dog to the ground is. I'll disagree with many of the terriers. I think when it's done "CALMLY" it's a form of redirection. Pin the dog calmly and don't let it up till it relaxes. with a young dog or pup you could also scruff the dog and hold it off the ground AGAIN waiting for it to relax.
I had a Kerry Blue some yrs ago that was very dog aggressive. I was in my Koehler days and beat that dog till I was tired. IT DIDN'T WORK! He actually started comming after me. (I don't blame him). That went really bad for the dog but it didn't help the dog aggression.
It was suggested I calmly held him dow till he relaxed. Believe me, the first time I did this I wondered if the day had enough hours. It DID work though.
If you do obedience with this dog, either do total motivational or learn control of YOURSELF using a pinch. To much pressure and your gonna light the fire. MAke the correction AS SOON AS THE DOG EVEN LOOKS AT THE OTHER DOG. Waiting for the actual attack is way to late.
I don't really believe in handler aggressive dogs. It's either an unstable dog or excessive/unfair correction on a strong dog.
Many are going to say that it's just another dog. Live with the little bassads for 30 yrs and you just might change your mind. ;-)
