Okay, I'm sure this has been discussed before but I didn't see it in a short search.
I've been a year + with Zeus training him not to be aggressive to other dogs out being walked. As previously mentioned I don't walk Zeus off lead and he gets walked once or twice EVERYDAY. It just makes me mad that there are dogs in my neighborhood that are allowed to run free, unsupervised. We've had run-ins with several dogs. Luckily there never has been a full blown fight...yet. It got to the point that a deputy was cruising the neighborhood one day and I stopped him and asked him the ramifications of an incident. He told me that as long as my dog was on a leash I was okay and the other dog owner would be fined and liable for vet bills.
Now my ego tells me to let Zeus have at him/her but common sense tells me NOT A GOOD IDEA.
What are your viewpoints and how do you handle unsupervised dogs? Have you ever gone and knocked on the owners door and told them they need to restrain their dog?
What say you?
If a dog was going to go after my dog, i would do ANYTHING to make sure that dog never gets a tooth on my dog. Know what i mean?
You have done a LOT of hard work with this dog! You need to protect him from being traumatized by a dog attacking him.
He could end up with PTSD, and attack every dog he sees if a dog was ever to get a hold of him with you around.
He may also think your so weak, you couldn't even protect him and he had to fight for himself.
What i do is i scream like a weirdo whenever i see a dog lose coming my way.
Anything to get the owners attention, or scare that dog away.
One day, a man would not get his dog on a leash, and away from me and my dog.
I told the man my dog bites, and is a danger to him and his dog. He said he did not mind, as his dog is larger.
I then said my friend with me sexually assaults animals.
He and everybody else stays CLEAR of me when im walking with my friend. In fact, they spread the word. So now when people in that area see me with my friend, they cross the street with their dogs! The only thing that got their attention, was me making up a story that my friend is a serious creep danger to their dogs.
Now, that may be too far for you.. But hey, it works for me.
I will do everything to protect my dog. Or any dog in my care.
I carry spray.
I will spray it at any dog that is coming towards me, after i warned the owner i would spray or injure his or her dog if it comes closer.
I have never needed to spray a dog.
Because me screaming like a freak while pointing at the dog does the trick of getting the owners to get the dog out of there, and quickly.
Sadly asking the owners to get the dog away kindly, does NOT work often.
It also does not work at all with dogs unattended.
So, do what you need to keep the dogs away from your dog.
Warn the owners, frighten thing if you must.
Good luck!
