I am soooo bleary!
Keep a bag of Zuke's mini treats on top of her crate. When it is time to go in, just toss in 3 little treats. Reluctance will be gone in an instant. And Beagles are excellent foodhounds, you will not have a problem any longer!
I just happen to have both Zuke's Salmon and Chicken (she likes the chicken). I tried your suggestion...along with clicking for walking close, clicking for a step in, clicking for two feet, clicking for whole body and a jackpot. Tried it each time she went out to potty and go back into her crate, and now, she will go into her crate when I point into it. Thanks!!!
She still howls though and whines, but not so much. No eye contact goes a long way to settling her down.
You will be happy if you start a little poop journal, too, because it's useful in many ways. If you need to adjust poop time for a time when you are home to walk her, that can be done by modifying feeding schedules. You can do the same to avoid having poop time in the middle of the night. It's also great to have it around the time of her "power walk" because the peristaltic action is such a powerful poop-starter.
Poop journal! Okay, makes sense. I now know she poops and pees an hour after eating. Now, this week I will keep a journal on how often she needs to poop. Another great suggestion!
She isn't interested in raw food right now. First dog I ever owned that didn't eat raw meat. However, I am not going to fast her to make her hungry. She is eating Wellness Super 5 mix and I am taking her in on Friday for a work up on her thyroid, kidneys, and liver...a junior panel. I need to know she is healthy before I try fasting. She doesn't present with an issue in regards to her health, but I want to make sure. And, as old as I think she is, if she doesn't want raw, I will make sure she has a good food to eat. (She does like canned sardines!)
She picked up the clicker so quickly. I will use that to train her.
I want to reward her for being quiet in her crate, but any acknowledgement and she is all over again being a loud beagle.
So, I haven't figured out how to click for quiet and reward her without starting her motormouth running.
And my neighbors have always thought me eccentric so no one comments on my walk around staring at the ground and then nodding with great satisfaction!
Oh, she is a hoarder of food. Found out she is picking out small bits of food and hiding them in her crate. So, my plan is to click randomly so she doesn't grab a kibble with each click and choke, and when she gets near the end..approximately 5 pieces... click with each bit and see if she finishes. If she does click, good Lucy! and reward some Zukes. I want her to trust I will feed her and not have to hoard, but I don't want to take her hoard away from her if that makes her comfortable for now. I can't see any problem with my idea, yet. I will think some more on it.
And nineteen howling Pugs! Wow!
And too funny on the poop album...although, it would go a long way at the vet's office to prove something is right or wrong with your dog.....hmmmmmmmm
Look! I DO fit in the bag.
