I feed most dogs once a day, except puppies, thin dogs that need more calories/food volume than I feel is good to feed at one meal, and dogs on meds that require a small amount of food (i.e. Morgi the Corgi and her chinese herbs)
I'm not going to address the wolves and gorging argument but a healthy dog's digestive tract is made to fill up with food and then be empty part of the time. They are not trickle feeders like horses and humans, and I find that my dogs seem to be more energetic and have more stamina for work when I'm not giving them 2 meals a day. Digestion takes a lot of energy.
I don't know that there is a right or wrong way to feed dogs, it's basically what works for EACH dog and EACH owner.
of the 8 dogs we have here right now, 2 are fed twice a day and the other 6 eat once a day. They'd all LOVE to eat twice
To add my unsolicited 2 pennies:
I have a small (10 lb) dog and feed her two meals a day, however, many times she has no interest in the second meal. To keep her interested in two meals I usually have to feed very little in first meal.
Thanks for your time in responding. Sorry I am just getting back to the board. I have been on the road.
I feed my labrador and my pug once a day and have never had an issue with either. The reasons for wanting to feed once a day are (1) convenience; (2) trying to reduce the number of late evening BMs (despite the marketing that Honest Kitchen food results in less BMs, I find that both my pug and the GSD pup have MORE BMs on Thrive -- and Embark before that -- than they had on kibble food; I am afraid to go past eight hours overnight with the GSD without taking her out because of the number of BMs the food produces. I don't want to go much past eight hours, but she had an accident about one month ago and I don't want to repeat it -- it was a VERY messy event at 5:00 a.m. (3) I work with my GSD pup a lot and she gets many healthy training treats during the day.
These are the reasons why, but, of course, I love this dog so much, I wouldn't want to compromise anything regarding her health. My other dogs do fine on one feeding a day, I just can't remember when I switched them over, as they are now seven and five years old.
I also feed twice a day. A littermate of my dog died of bloat at a very young age (under 2 years old), and based on our lifestyle, I think feeding twice a day will help mitigate my dog's risk factors.
