Connie………
---------- Connie, I respect your opinions, I always look forward to reading your replies to all threads,
You have cleared up so many nutrition and behaviour questions for me, your knowledge is tempered with wisdom and compassion.
I really did not mean to offend you, honestly, I would love the opportunity to buy you a coffee and chat.
NILIF is not me"? I don't understand this.
------I love my dogs. It is hard for me to not give them affection.
I asked a question about the advisors you consulted, Dave. I asked if they had actually observed (as opposed to a phone call). I admit to being flummoxed that you think this question is so out of line.
--------It is not out of line. Only on the phone, not in home
lack of dexterity in my hands from two decades of working very hard leaves me in a position where I am unable to convey my thoughts to paper with out spending a lot of time." I want to add that I am just one of probably many here who voluntarily respond here, over and over, despite severe hand arthritis. Brevity of response is not the main issue, IMO.
------- carpal tunnel(operations in 20’s)now arthritis I have most of all the strength, no dexterity, typing is harder than shovelling or raking for hours,
Yes brevity is not an issue, clarity of thought is
And I hope you continue to ask. You need the help. I will excuse MYself from your thread, since it's my answers that are such a problem.
So I will stop responding. Perhaps this will work out better for you.
--------yes I need the help, please don’t
Jenny………………
If I understand the OP correctly, this is the situation: He has a 14 mo. Rotty that is reactive and giving him problems. He has two other mastiff females that are doing fine, except for their interactions with the Rotty. He does not know how to fix the situation with the Rotty, he is asking for help with that.
---------One mastiff, Delilah is quite indifferent towards Pisa.
-------Yes that is accurate
He does not belief that NILIF would help his situation with all his dogs.
--------it is not that I have a disbelief ,this I know will help, my wife is quite adamant I follow through with nilif on Pisa.
My big girls, I spoil, I have changed a lot though
He is planning on breeding mastiffs.
---------yes, 1 mastiff, Delilah
He has problems with his hands, perhaps arthritis.
--------Addressed above, however my few words will be chosen more carefully
I can see this OP might catch a lot of heat on this site:
---------------I wish I had mentioned Pisa attacking Bridget’s face her 2nd night home, I was too embarrassed to say that, now I have to fix a lot more
1. He can't manage the dogs he has but he wants to add breeding to the mix;
-------- I am having issues with one, I can manage her, but have not properly
2. He doesn't understand basic dog management handling, nor training, to establish a healthy safe situation for the dogs he has;
-------- not accurate,
3. 3. He may not have the hand strength or dexterity to practice the necessary handling and training to keep all his dogs healthy and safe;
----------- I do, just not typing
He refers to the possibility of setting up a dog breeding business as a second income generator, which raises all kinds of red flags about BYB;
------- I addressed this, I do have to add I really take offence to such an unfair assumption in a broad statement when you do not know me,
I have a few homes to give pups to if I am unable to sell to perfect homes
I have been offered a vulgar amount for a pup from a few breeders, to me it’s not the money
5. He does not have a professional trainer/behaviourist to help him resolve his existing problems,
------------ Problem… not Plural
much less the additional problems when breeding is added in;
---------------- I would think the word issues should be in place of problems
. He saw what happened when Nick Logan decided to re-home Gambit and thinks that was somehow condoned on this site, and maybe that is what he should do with Pisa, instead of repairing the situation he has already created that is causing him problems.
_-------- no, not condoned,
I want help to fix, , why else would I be asking, rehoming was suggested to me,
is the easy way out that is for sure not right, I made a commitment
. Apologize to Connie and get her back on your team. You are going to need her wisdom and knowledge.
------------you are 110% right , I had not read this far when I did
If I was you, Dave Owen, I would shelve your plans to become a mastiff breeder. You really haven't shown you know enough about dogs and you are likely to cause countless misery for untold numbers of dogs by your breeding activity. Make a commitment to the dogs you have and figure out how to address Pisa's needs in a sustainable, healthy way. Get the training you need to be able to handle all your dogs in a way that keeps them all safe and healthy My .02 cents. I am not an experienced handler, nor professional in the dog world. Everything I have learned has been through books, dvds, professional consultations, haunting this forum, and hard fought experience with my particular pups.
---------- My .02 cents,------yes, and some of your time, and a different perspective, I would buy you a coffee, I;m sure our discussion would be heated, yet civil
Steve………
Quote:
This forum has helped me to realize some of my opinions were well constructed delusions,
I really seem to be putting my foot in my mouth lots, but if that is my cost to learn, more importantly to adjust my thinking I will continue until I am asked not to.
------- is something incorrect in that statement?
--------- It’s pretty obvious I am really trying, that is quite a humbling statement.
Hey Jenny, any chance the Rott may not really be the problem?
----------Ah, Steve, I can only imagine your opinion of me.
I have read many of your posts, lots of the older archived ones. You are one of those people with wisdom and experience.
I’d buy you a coffee, not so I could kick any sand back, but have a conversation.
I believe I know what you have eluded to a few times, definitely a PM issue, if you are ever willing.
I guess Steve, I have shown you (or anyone)no reason to want to help me, My accomplishments are not valid to you, there’s been a couple little digs,
Basically I’m hoping you will possibly instead of criticize me, help me.
Tracy………..
I get the feeling the breeding operation is a done deal. The web site is up announcing a planned litter,
-------yes
he's already bought two new pups for this breeding program.
----------I do think there is potential, the pups have an excellent pedigree.
the standards and activities I have done and achieved with my girls, the basic pet owner OB, and their pulling abilities, were my requirements, what had to be proven to me
My standards for pups are higher, show, and rally, possibly leading to ob,
They will all cart,
Pipe dream-- I want a fawn pulling team, and a brindle pulling team
I don't think telling him to put the brakes on it at this point is going to happen.
---------no
So dealing with reality:
Instead of storming off in a huff, I'd advise you to stick around here. As a brand new breeder, you need all the free advice and expertise you can get. There are many long-time successful breeders that you can learn from--not to mention great advice from vets, trainers, and canine health/nutrition experts. Where else are you going to get all that for free?
------------------That is very sound advice, I need to react less myself.
It comes through loud and clear that the Rottie just doesn't fit in your house--or in your vision for a Mastiff kennel. So you have a few choices:
1. Re-home the dog. It won't earn you any brownie points as a dog owner, but I'm more interested in knowing that Pisa has a home where she can live the rest of her life where she is wanted and live to her full potential, whatever that is for her. As your breeding operation kicks in and you have a litter of puppies on the ground will you have MORE time to spend with her, or less? When you've got a houseful of puppies, will she be more difficult or less?
-------------------she is wanted
Quarantine her from the rest of your other dogs and manage that for the rest of her life.
--------------seems like a poor existence
Fix the situation by doing something DIFFERENT than what you're currently doing in terms of training/leadership/pack structure. Because clearly what you're doing now is not working, by your own admission.
----------------This is what I want,
yes my leadership skills need to improve,
this after noon I haven’t kissed Pisa’s head once, and have not given her her belly rub, she is already listening better
I think people here would be willing to help you with any one of those three decisions.
-------------I really hope so, I know how sincere most peoples intentions are
But it might mean you have to hear some things you wish you didn't have to hear.
--------- I understand, but before anyone chews me out from behind the anonymity of the internet, PM me a phone #, I’ll cover the call and that way I’ll be able to get the tone it was meant in, or possibly a few minutes of talking to me might be OK.
But as the owner of a brand new breeding kennel, I imagine you'll get used to that.
----------- I do not even want to start about the “clicks.”
I incorrectly use the term English Mastiff, they are Mastiffs…..nuff said
Anne………………….
Here we go AGAIN!!!
--------- I can guess the tone of that
BTW.. Dave....I have bad arthritis in my hands, too.
------------I really was not trying for sympathy, we all know which words sympathy is between in the dictionary.
Anne, I mean no disrespect by that, I was on celebrex for quite a few years, I miss it, but it has side effects,
NILIF is one of the best ways to live with most dogs & especially with 'problem' dogs or pushy dogs. Also putting you dog back in 'boot camp' for a few weeks can help. But you have to be a good 'leader' to impliment any of these. And you have to be willing to be consistant with anything & everything that you do.
------------- I know, I will admit this is my failing, I understand it, I dislike not giving unnecessary love,
… in not being consistent I have to correct Pisa for pack indiscretions, I feel bad and give her free love I have to correct Pisa for pack indiscretions, I feel bad and give her free love I have to correct Pisa for pack indiscretions, I feel bad and give her free love,
in hindsight that makes me not only unfair, but mean.
I really failed up until today
. I know I have to be 100% NILIF, I was hoping for equilibrium at 70%, it’s not possible with Pisa
Ann, I’d buy you a coffee, but think I’d have to sit across from you.
Tracy………
Dave, whether you want to call it NILIF or not, you better learn the concept if you want to run a kennel of dogs. It is simply not possible to live successfully with a pack of dogs and not teach them self-control, which is exactly what NILIF does.
-----------------My mastiffs, they are big, sweet, lovable fur babies. I am confident I have almost reached an equilibrium, yes I need to sway a bit more to NILIF, not much but a bit.
I can't *make* my dogs sit, wait, stay in the yard, be calm, not eat my shoes, not fight with pack members, etc. Nobody can. The dog has to do those things on their own, by making a conscious decision to do it, because they believe that it's in their best interest to do it. They have to WANT to do these things.
All I can do is teach them that THEIR OWN SELF-CONTROL is the magic that runs the universe.
In my world, NILIF isn't about punishing, denying or coercing a dog into submission. It's about helping making the connection for the dog that THEY have an active role in how this works. It's not just me bestowing random rewards or random punishment. I can't think of any situation that is fairer or clearer for a dog.
----------It is fair, I understand
My dogs are the most spoiled dogs in America. They want for nothing, and I deny them almost nothing.
---------my friends would say that with Canada
But I require them to "earn" it by behaving and following a reasonable list of house rules,
----------I agree and also require that
#1 of which is "keep your teeth to yourself."
--------- We have never had any teeth touch another dog.
Remember, the other side of the coin of "Nothing in Life is Free" is "Everything Can be Yours if you Know How to Get It."
That is true, and very sound logic, coffee is on me
I’m going to detail where I’m at with Pisa, explain what I’ve done, what I know I need to do, and be sure 100% I am using the proper terminology .
I feel confident with proper self control, and the excellent guidance I humbly ask for, I will fix the position I have created.
I’ll get it up by tomorrow night.
Humbly thanking you all in advance.
