...I don't think a six-month-old puppy should be getting a 'get him' command directed at people...'
(Joe Pesci voice here): Ya think?
This is about the craziest thing I've ever heard. Dobie King, you need to get with the program here... or some kind of program anyway. If you were serious about protection training this pup, right now you would be doing nothing but playing tug games with him.
I am not going to reinvent the wheel right here on this board. You need to go out to the main Leerburg website and read Ed Frawley's articles about the drives of protection training, nerve problems in dogs, etc. etc. etc. You have a LOT of reading to do. In the meantime--knock it off with teaching your dog to alert on people. That is COMPLETELY CRAZY and is going to land you in serious trouble before you can count to ten.
I kid you not, brother...

In addition to using this disscussiou board and Ed's web site, I have a half dozen of Ed's tapes including the Flinks tapes available so far. With the board, web site, and tapes, I'm in heaven but pp training is real serious, and you need to find a good trainer in addition to all the help I know you can get here.|Re: how old and how big is your Doberman|E. There are places for clowning around--yes, even on this board at times.
But King Dobie, I probably speak for just about everyone here when I say that nobody gets your joke.

0099000021000027|0099000021000000|99|301|king dobie,
Did you know that the average age that aggression problems manifest is between 18 months and 3 years? It's important to take your time training protection, because you really want your dog to have solid nerves and be stable in any situation. By teaching your PUPPY to be aggressive at such a young age, I think that you are making a huge mistake, and are setting yourself up for some real problems. What happens when your dog attacks someone and has to be put down? You will have let him down, and he will have paid for your mistake with his life. If you love your dog, listen to these people. They are trying to help keep you from making a humungous mistake.|Re: how old and how big is your Doberman|J Parker|Lisa Swanston|Wed Jun 19 14:02:00 2002|208.16.75.131|1|1|0|0
0099000021000028|0099000021000000|99|1423|KingDobe, I will ignore your previous post and illustrate a few things I have learned here as a newbie. Perhaps you'll get the picture too.
A) a good dog is not made in 6 months. It takes a lifetime of learning and training for you and the dog
B) a good dog may only be as good as his genetic material, BUT can be made better through PROPER training and socialization
C) a good dog can be screwed up very easily, BUT it can take a long time and sometimes never to fix problems that you created
D) a good dog trainer recognizes that every dog is an individual, even within a certain breed, what works for one may not work or be best for another
E) a good dog owner recognizes his limitations and knows when to admit he/she's wrong
F) a good dog and a good owner are sometimes hard to find
