It's a fact of life I've come to accept as a law enforcement officer. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Because of that, I let my training and experience, guided by, what I believe is a, moral conscious. Had the ball game erupted into a brawl where people were seriously injured and extensive tax payer property was damaged, the criticism would have been; where were the cops; did anyone check the local Dunkin Donuts. I wish I had the luxury of living in some peoples dream worlds.

Thanks for the link . Nothing new to me . But that link lead to other links about fights at HS basketball games . I recommend people check all those videos out if you think police officers shouldn't be at HS sporting events . If they have a better way of dealing with them or preventing them I be intersted in hearing it .
Just to keep on topic . I believe the Police involved in the OP's HS basketball game where doing what they thought was best to prevent something bad from happening and had no racial biases when doing so . Do I prefer a different way ? Yes . Do I think too much focus was put on the K9 instead of the trouble makers? Hell yes!
In our college area of town a large house party was getting to rowdy so the RPD tossed in a tear gas canister the size of a fire extinguisher which ended the party very quickly
I don't expect an officer to leave his dog in the car any more than I would expect him to leave his gun in the car. (Never mind some colleges around here have instituted such stupid policies for their campus safety officers.)
Leave the dog in the car until needed? You mean the officer is supposed to sprint out of the school, go however far it is to the parking lot, get the dog, and race back in? How much time is that? Violence happens fast. Violent folk are not going to sit around and wait nicely while you go get your backup before proceeding with their impulses.
Well, living in this area all I can say is that is to be expected. The people of Gary for quite some time now have began trending to be very resistant to Police. I live about 20 miles east of there and truely hope that somebody over there gets it together and starts to enforce the law again. As for the dog, the handler was responding to an assistance call. There was nothing to indicate in the article he or she put the dog into an aggressive state or that the dog lashed out at anyone. It sounds to me that the presence of the dog did exactly what it was supposed to, brought the situation under control.
That whole editorial was focusing on the wrong issue. What about the people who were causing trouble? The dog was just in case a serious situation happened. Those cops I'm sure brought guns that could have been used to shoot and kill people, much more damage then the dog could have done, but the guns aren't an issue here. Some people just like to feel like they are the target that everyone is after.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
