I want to clarify my problem with the owner:
The fact that he yelled down to the landscapers to "stay in your car" implies that he knows that his dogs have the potential to negatively react to a stranger on their property. Nothing wrong with that. Many dogs do, and should, IMO.
BUT, since he obviously knew that, and he was in no position to be present should anything occur, then the dogs should have been contained or supervised, even on his own property. The dogs, loose and without an owner there to signal how they should handle the visitors, had to make a decision for themselves...a decision that GIVEN THE LANDSCAPER PULLED THE WIFE TO THE GROUND was correct, IMO.
So, the dog did nothing wrong. He acted as a good dog should, IMO. And I'm not saying that the owner meant for this to happen. I'm sympathetic to his situation: We have all made mistakes or been looking the wrong way when something happened with our dogs.
But over and over again, the newspapers are filled with stories about dogs attacking (adults, dogs or other dogs)and while the story taken as a whole can be complicated in terms of who was right and who was wrong...it can be simplified in every controversial case that I've seen into one truth: If the dogs were properly contained, then it wouldn't have happened.
If we, as dog owners, are going to own strong breeds, or many dogs, then we do have a responsibility to respect and anticipate their strengths, drives, and possible reactions. And I'm not being hypocritical here---this is what I do myself. I'm not taking any chances. I'm not going to wait until something happens to become vigilant; I'm going to prevent it from happening in the first place, to the best of my ability.
And as much as I think the landscaper was obviously moronic at best, according to the story, he did get out of the car only when the wife arrived. It's not unreasonable for someone to assume that if the wife (i.e. owner #2) came home, then they should be cleared to get out.
I realized I'm putting myself at risk for appearing to be siding with the landscaper, and I'm not. But proper containment of dogs who weren't supervised...even on their own property...could have prevented this whole mess.
Congo does NOT deserve to be penalized in ANY way for what he did. If someone pulled me to the ground, I have zero doubt that Carbon would go after them with teeth blazing. Based on the story, I THINK this whole thing wouldn't have happened if that idiot hadn't pulled the wife to the ground. But I KNOW it wouldn't have happened if the dogs had been contained.
Again, I realize this might not be a popular viewpoint and I respect where everyone is coming from. But if I was the dog's owner in this situation, once I was done being pissed as all hell at the landscaper's lack of basic intelligence, I would have realized that I did have some responsibility for what happened, as well.
SORRY CONNIE: I didn't see your post when I posted this.
