I was reading some posts and came across them saying if you take the ball out of there mouths it can cause them to lose confidence. I know during the tug that is correct, they always win. My GSD female is 2 years old and i just can across what Schutzhund is a few months ago and it drew me in. I have been working with her steady for 2 months. Im still with marker training no correction. I did it all wrong the first year when i knew nothing. i have to fight with her to get the ball out everytime. She has a pinch collar but like i said i backed away from corrections 2 weeks ago after i found our that was killing her dirve. She will eventually drop it but when i go to grab it she snags it back up. Any suggestions on getting her to drop the ball.. Her ball drive is crazy by the way. I can hold a piece of steak in front of her and sometimes she might drop the ball to get the food...not very often. thanks>>> New trainer by the way.

yeah that helps. i guess i will say out while in the process of tricking her with food...or worry about the command later. So trick her wit food, mark, reward again...hmm...Ive been pulling it out of her mouth so long i hope it hasnt killed her confidence. With a tennis ball its almost impossible to get out. But all i use now is racket balls...a lot easier to get out. Everytime i try to pull the ball out i give her the command out. im confusing her and causing confidence problems probably.
okay so i will trick with her favorite treat, mark when she drops it,reward and keep repeating. Should i say out right before i try to trick her? ive tried this and usually by the time the ball hits the ground she sees me going for it and usually beats me to it or ends up nipping on my fingers in the process. But i havent stuck to it. I bet if i do it will work out fine. If i could get this down it would make my training sessions much shorter then having to pull the ball out everytime. lol...ALOT SMOOTHER....her ball is her baby.....so crazy about it...she goes around the house 10 times a day looking for one....haha...okay enough rambling...i have a bad habit about this...let me know if that sounds okay Aimee

Do most of you guys/girls use German Commands...because im shit out of luck if so...lol.... she does gets the sit and stay confused sometimes. after sit i will say stay and she will down at times....but that is getting better (at times). maybe similar sounding?
I use both. Sit, down, foos (tighter heal), heal for just walking nicely by my side, heir for coming and sitting in front and come for just getting back over to me. I've never taught the stay - whichever command I give is to be held until told to "break!". Sometimes Falcon will try to go to a down from a sit but it is not because he didn't understand, he just doesn't want to keep sitting so he tries to lay down. (He is told again to "sit". ) Hope that helps!
The 2 I have came knowing both english and german commands. It took me a bit to get the hang of it, that's why I try to remember to put them in for you so you have some familiarity when/if you go to a club. And if you want to teach the new guy in german. Another adult I acquired responded negatively to commands and the helpful, smart LB members recc I re-teach him as if he were a pup with totally different commands...worked excellent--I don't think that is the case for you, just added that.
If she knows the stay command and is being lazy I do like Barbara, if initally I'm wondering if she knows it I'll take a step in before the 4 hit the ground to so to speak force the continued to sit and repeat sit, stay, reward. Similiar to teaching other things you add time and then distance as they improve with the stay but not both at the same time.
With the out, I'll say out give them a second, if they release mark, reward....I have used 2 balls before and will show the second after saying out, they release, mark, reward, keep their focus on the one I'm holding while I'm retrieving the out'd ball and then as they get the hang of it decrease the obviousness of the bribe.
With one I have to admit regardless of the bribe they wanted the one I was reaching for on the ground and in that case I would step on it and wait for a calmer response from the dog then go to grab it: it was turning into a game of who's going to get their first and by stepping on it or body blocking it the dog couldn't get it. But this is more of a leave it or off type exercise vs teaching an out.
(after typing this I wanted to clarify that I teach one exercise per session -- I hope that I didn't complicate it with discussing an off exercise)

all sounds good. i think i will switch to heir for the come and face me. By the way she is doing great at that. An occasional jump on me to try and get the ball, but that didnt take her long at all to understand, Worked on the out when i got home tonight from work,...got called in...again. she is doing it with a bribe with food. takse a few seconds for her to give it up. Im telling her out a few times then when she drops the ball i mark and reward. The dreaded heal i will start on my next days off. This year has been a crazy busy year at work, but im still making time daily to get some sessions in. Since doing this positive training i think her focus, and drive has gotten way better..Also she seems such a happy dog now..the first year and a half i had her you could tell she wasnt happy and bored. My own fault Now that she feels like she has a job it makes me want to come home and hangout with her...lol..I think she will be a good candidate for bite training. still have to work on finding someone that knows their stuff on it. Plus i still have a bit more obedience training to go before i get there. Thanks for all the great information. It has made my life so much easier.
One last thing. The past 7 weeks or so this is what she has learned.
-sit
-down
-stay
-long stay
-sit from motion and stay
-down from motion and stay
- havent worked on the motions in a few days. she was a little rusty yesterday. will still work on these
-down from a sit and stay from a long distance.
-recall from a distance.(still using ball to throw behind me on her approach.
-Front face( just learned. will keep working)
Questions is..Should i keep working these commands until she does them i would say 95% or better? then move on to new things. And do i need to do them a few times a week as the maintenance protocol? im thinking i will eventually have to keep the ball out of her site later on so she doesnt rely on it every time. Also i need to work on switching up the pattern im doing it in so she isnt expecting it. ( i think im supposed to do this) Again sorry for the novel im writing again. You guys/girl have been very patient with me and you really have made my dog great. I cant thank you guys enough. you actually gave me lots of confidence!
