Why would one choose the new vibrating collar over a more traditional electric collar like my Dogtra with the vibrating pager? What is the difference between the two, and what types of dogs would one choose one collar over the other for?
Is the vibrating collar a completely different thing?
I have a dogtra and use the pager, which to me means the vibrating collar function. I'm not sure what you mean, how you are differentiating one collar from the other. Can you post a link to the "new vibrating collar" so I can understand what it is you are referring to?
Might work for pets, but not sure I would trust it if my dog went into total prey, took off and I needed to get them to pay attention....
Carol, I use the pager function for recall. It works very well when Hans is in another room or just out enjoying himself in the yard. But if he sees a squirrel or we're out for a walk and another dog charges their fence the pager is totally ineffective. Once he goes into drive the only thing that gets his attention is a strong nick or a huge leash pop.
For what I need for my dog a pager only collar would not be adequate. But I can see that it may be useful for people who never have a need for traditional e-collar training.

It may be a good "correction" tool for pets and other dogs that do not need stim from an e-collar, but it pretty much would be an annoyance that my dogs (if they locked into prey drive after something fuzzy) would learn to ignore and run through if I used it too much.

I have the unleashed technologies collar. The idea is that the vibration is supposed to be adjustable, just like the stim. It is adjustable, but it's hard for me to tell that much difference.
There are fewer levels of stim than my dogtra, so there is very noticeable step up from one level to the next- it seems to jump from "can't feel it at all" to "ow, I don't like that"- nothing in between. But I only have experience with the dogtra 282 platinum- lots of levels so not so big a difference between them.
I had it strapped on my forearm, trying to make sure there is a difference between vibration levels (it's really hard for me to notice), and comparing the second button (mine has two buttons- vibration only and vibration followed by stim) at the first couple of levels.
Since by level two or three the stim was quite unpleasant, I'm not sure why I decided to try the highest level. I had the collar on my left arm, and was holding the control in my left hand. When I got the stim my arm involuntarily few out straight, and luckily I had the neck strap on or I'd have thrown the controller over the neighbors fence. I don't see myself EVER using that level.
so far my I've only used the vibration at level one for my pup, seems to work for now with no distractions.
