Fitting a Muzzle for Your Dog
Figuring out the proper size muzzle can be a complicated process. We've created several mediums on assisting you with properly fitting your dog's muzzle. You can choose to enroll in our free online course How to Measure Your Dog for a Muzzle, view an instructional video, or read a detailed article to figure out your dog's muzzle size.
If you are still unsure of which size to choose, measure the circumference of your dog's snout as well as the length. You can call our office at (715) 235-6502 and we will do our best to help you decide the best style and size of muzzle for your dog.
Muzzle Sizing Tips
There are a few things you need to know about selecting a muzzle size for your dog:
- On large breed dogs, we recommend that the circumference of the muzzle is between 1 to 3 inches larger than your dog's actual measured circumference.
- A muzzle is too small if the circumference of the muzzle is the same size as the circumference of the dog's actual nose measurement.
- When wearing a muzzle, the muzzle should ride 1/2 of an inch below a line drawn between the lowest points on both eyes. The front of the muzzle should also extend 1/2 of an inch past the end of the dog's nose.
- If you push the muzzle back and it covers the eyes of your dog, then the muzzle is too big.
- If at any point the muzzle comes off, it is either too loose or too big around. A muzzle should fit comfortably while still allowing the dog to pant and bark.
