Scent Work

Dogs are born with incredible noses, and scent work sports provide a safe, structured way to tap into this natural talent. From beginners to advanced canines, dogs of all breeds and sizes can benefit from the mental stimulation, physical activity, and confidence-building that scent work offers.
There’s a wide variety of scent work activities to explore. Nose work, tracking, detection sports, and single-odor exercises all challenge a dog to use their sense of smell to locate specific scents. Some sports simulate real-life detection scenarios, such as finding hidden items, while others focus purely on fun and enrichment. Whether your dog is a working breed or a family companion, there’s a scent sport suited to their abilities and energy level.
Beyond being a great outlet for energy, scent work is highly enriching for a dog’s mind and body. Searching for scents encourages problem-solving, focus, and confidence, while also strengthening the bond between handler and dog. Many trainers and dog owners find that dogs engaged in scent work are calmer at home and more attentive during walks and training sessions.
Getting started is easier than you might think. With the right guidance, basic supplies, and a lot of enthusiasm, almost any dog can begin exploring the world of scent work. It’s a sport that celebrates what dogs do best—their incredible sense of smell—while keeping them happy, healthy, and mentally engaged.
Kevin Sheldahl 3 Day Scent Work Seminar

Join the Kevin Sheldahl Scent Work Seminar, Nov 8–10, 2025 in Menomonie, WI, hosted by Leerburg. Learn the foundations of detection training from one of the nation’s top experts. Led by Kevin Sheldahl, one of the nation’s most qualified detection dog trainers, this 3-day workshop covers odor recognition, indication, alert, and search foundations for all detection disciplines.
Working spots are still available for beginner, intermediate, and advanced dogs! We'll send you an email within one business day to confirm whether you plan to bring a dog.
Attendees will learn about cognitive biases like the Clever Hans effect, how canine attributes impact outcomes, and the role of proper equipment—such as odor introduction boxes, vertical boards, and handling gear—in building foundation skills. Practical sections include search pattern development, successive approximation, and creating solid indications, with attention to behaviors like flushing versus obedience. The seminar will emphasize introducing rituals, reinforcing anticipation and motivation, and structuring reinforcement schedules for long-term success. Problem-solving strategies address common challenges like maintaining indication clarity and odor association. Finally, the seminar will prepare handlers for the next stages of detection work by outlining transition exercises, pattern work, and generalization techniques while considering each dog’s natural hunting drive and behavioral tendencies.
