Hello. I have a question for anyone with Dobe experience. I am a novice Dobe owner and have posted about this particular Dobe before. BTW, Connie, I got her on THK and she is doing soooooooo much better! I also found a pretty good vet that didn't laugh in my face when I mentioned the BARF diet to her. The problem that I have noticed recently is that her front paws don't have that particular 'curled-toe' look that Dobes generally have. Her paws are splayed wide and I KNOW that can't be right! I clipped her nails and figured she probably needs some more exercise, but has anyone heard of any dobe's/other breeds having that issue? When I got her, she was in pretty bad condition so we have slowly been pulling out of that and now I have this... Any advice would be appreciated besides the obvious that we're gonna have to go to the vet, again. Thanks again and hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day!

Hi Cat,
You mentioned she was in bad shape when you got her. Did she have abnormally long nails when you got her? I ran into this with a Dal and he was quite splayed. It could have been a coincidence. I got his nails down to normal length after a while but the splay never went away. He also had bad confirmation in his elbows that contributed to all this.
Maybe a vet check on the elbows might give you some information. Sorry I can't be more informative. Could be many things. My Dobe is 8 months and she is going through a wierd growth period, she was straight, then splayed, now straight again. How old is yours?
Lynn
She is only about 3 1/2 months old. So your Dobe's paws were splayed and then straight and the splayed again? See, when I got her, her toes were just like they're supposed to be. Yep, Gonna have to take her to the vet...again. *sigh* For the money that I paid for her, she is becoming VERY expensive! I knew that there would be expense. Thanks.

Lynn mentioned long claws causing splayed toes as a possibility...... I didn't know this, but I looked it up. If before you clipped them, they were a little too long, then it could indeed have caused splaying, just as she suggested.
I haven't found so far whether the splaying can reverse with claws kept clipped.
Other causes I saw (such as arthritis) did not seem applicable to a puppy.
Maybe a call to the vet can determine whether or not a visit is needed; I think I would want to take her in, though, and make sure there isn't some problem with her gait that is causing it.
P.S. That's great that you have her on good food (The Honest Kitchen).
Now she has diarrhea... She was fine yesterday! Her stomach is all bloated too. This dog is costing me a fortune that I do not currently have! I paid $1500 for this animal and that was for companion/pet stock. I'm thinking that maybe just maybe I got screwed. *sigh* I e-mailed some pics of the paws to the breeder Sunday and still have not heard anything back. Wanted to let you ladies know, thank you for all the advice! I'll let you know what the vet says...

Cat, Has the breeder been helpful to you with these questions? It's a good sign if they offer an open discussion. Mine has had problems off and on with loose stool but it took me a while to find a diet that worked for her. Her stomach is picky!
Lynn
I bought her from a breeder in Alabama. Her stool is good now, guess she was just upset yesterday.... Called the vet to ask about the splayed toes this morning. They're supposed to get back to me. I know it seems like I am not all that concerned about my dog, but I truly am. I just went through a divorce, I have two boys under 6 years old and I am active duty Air Force. Not whining, just explaining my 'business'. I'm sure everyone else is just as busy if not more so. Her stomach was all kinds of jacked up when I first got her. I was really upset because she was supposed to be an older pup when I got her and she was supposed to have cropped ears. Well, I have her to deal with now. I will never purchase a dog that isn't German working stock again if it's a Dobe or a GSD.
