I know now that this is something myself and fellow pit bull owners just have to deal with. It surprises me how enraged I get every time it happens though. It happens more frequently since I have switched to the BARF diet and my male has really leaned up. I was wondering though if any of ya all get this with your dogs as well...
It usually goes like this: I pull up at a 7-11 or a WaWa with my male APBT sitting in my passenger seat, usually he is in his crate but for those instances like yesterday when I had to run out for milk, we have a 7-11 about 2 miles down the road and he loves to stick his head up to the window partially open. Two guys on VERY nice choppers pull in. (don't get me wrong, I ride as well..nothin against bikers). I come out with my milk and the gentleman is looking at Buddy through the window. Buddy is all waggy tail and pit bull smiles..there is only a small crack of the window. The man says to me "I'll give you 500 dollars in cash for your dog". I reply "Oh he is not for sale. He is a beloved member of my family!!" I'm thinkin you idiot he is 10 years old...you should see his teeth...he goes for his dental next week...eerrrrrrr...I get in the car and drive home....and I am so angry!!!! My girl friend who has a female Staff got the other day...."Whoa what a great little bitch how much ya want to breed her", reply "Nothing she is fixed"; reply "I'll give ya 100 dollars". At least that is funny...sad but dang.
So when any of you are out with your dogs,,,do you ever get these questions..or is just a pit bull thing?????
i have an english mastiff. i get people asking to breed him to their female. nobody asks to buy him, though. i think they probably think he is too big for them! <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
i don't let this annoy me though. i just take it as a compliment to my dog and his breeder.
why don't you just decide it's flattery and smile and thank them for the compliment?
I have an apbt who I consider a big girl at 50lbs. I get people arguing with me that she can't be a pit bull because she is too small. I get so angry. I get asked if I fight her, if I am going to breed her, if she has puppies. She is spayed, people don't get it. I haven't had anyone try to buy her though, but nobody here wants them, they are illegal here and it is so hard to own them and follow the laws and such, so nobody wants them unless they're a puppy.
I used to have people offer me big bucks when I had my GSDs though.
"My pit bull is a hero because she holds her head up high despite what the world thinks of her"
We used to get approached quite often when we lived in the city with our boy APBT. It used to really bother me since we were always trying to CHANGE the stereotype against them. But since we moved to the country and we don't have to walk him on regular city streets he doesn't get as much attention anymore. I like it that way.
We rescued a litter of puppies not too long ago. When people who we are interviewing to adopt come over and see him we get the questioning looks and disapproving stares. You have a PIT BULL with your kids? *sigh*
I never got those types of looks/stares when I had my Rott or Lab mix or GSD mix or Remi...
I get that all the time with my doberman, he's albino (I got him as a puppy thinking I'd rather see one in a happy home than ending up in a rescue since breeders continue to pop them out) and I've had 3 people literally pull over in their cars and ask to buy him. I am polite when it happens but if it is near my house I sure don't go straight back in the door.
I was once told by a woman to be careful or one day I'd wake up and she would have stolen him! I think she thought she was being funny but I hope she got the clue I didn't agree when I smiled and asked her if she had any children before walking away. Grr.
More often I get the do you actually feed your dog looks and comments from people since he has decided to be a skeleton for the past 2 months.
I chalk it up to do I really care what anyone else thinks? Nope.
Makes me feel like it is just stupid people. I know they see my Buddy and think he would be a good fighter....for a 10 year old dog he really has a fine body. He loves to run with me and we run 2 to 3 miles 5 to 6 days a week. All you need do is open his mouth to see he is an old man and you have to get really close to see his muzzle is starting to grey (he is black with white on his chest), and the things that look like punctures ... I think that is what they are seeing, is where his fur is starting turn grey. The thought of anyone hurting him just upsets me...ya know. I really do love this dog, I don't think there will ever be another like him.
