Hi, FYI... this thread is a continuation from a post that got way off topic. It was started in the "Sport Tracking" section and titled, Terminology.
Sefi, a couple more questions for you now.
Why randomly recall a dog from a search? Is this for strengthening obedience during a search or for improving the dog's desire to continue his search or perhaps both?
What is a "half passive" alert? I've never heard this term before. I am imagining a dog sitting by a find and barking at it... am I on the right track?
In the last post (from previous topic) you mentioned that Persistance on the Search and Persistance on the Target, affect each other, can you tell me how?
I understand what you are getting at when you described some training methods to improve the dog's persistance on the target, but what I'm wondering is, for a dog that is being trained as an EDD, should that dog be trained to give an active indication when searching for its toy to increase his persistance for target and then later taught a new method of indication?
Thanks for the input, Sefi!
(If the answers to any of these questions should not be circulated in the open forum would you please PM me?)
hi bradley im glad you open adiffrent post for that topic.
about the recall ididnt meant that you randomly recall the dog allthou ido it frome time to time with certain dogs becuse of the reasons you mentiond and for the increse the fastness of the generall search but either way it dosent rellate to persistance on the target.
what imeant was that you should randomly incorage your dog when he does good and not only on the target but on the search, on the recall etc...
about half passive alert that means that the dog is sitting near the target but keep intensly sniff it from the oddor major source or when he sit and by command point with his nose to the mos major source of scent. or on ahigh hides jump near the target for the sniff all of that of course with out touching it. we call it here "half passive alert." or "active not agressiv alert".
persintance on the target and persistance on the search are similar by requaiering the dog to hold a high drives for along periods with out getting tham unload and without giving up.
so when yo develop one persistance you usally give your dog skills that afect the other
with that said it is prety common to see dogs with low persistance on the target and high persistance in search or the opissite....
in the later stage of persistance on the target training the dog should get the end of the oddor and folow it to the closets point to the source / where the scent is the strongests- the nearest end of the scent cone start point.
adog with agood persistance on the target do not let go when he scent the target oddor weaker as it is he will just go on the scent direction as long its get stronger when it get weaker he start go back he can repeat it from side to side untill it hit the most exsact stronger scent point than indecat it - agood example for that you can see in my short clip iadded here on bomb detection forum awhile ago in apost called jagger explosives first steps look when ido an empty search in abuilding than add 50 grams of black powder outside the door and you will see how the dog get the scent from the wind blowing threw the window cracks and do exactly what ijust mentiond.
now ithink that part of the answer of your last question:
idont see it wrong to give to atrained EDD with asolid indication
agame of "get the ball" from time to time allthou there is arisk factor if you bring your dog to often to sitiuations he need to do move things or scratch things to get it.
ithink that adog that is allready consider as and train EDD or even begun the first steps of training or even imprints should have the basic persistance on atarget and on search and can at least move to the next stage where the persistence o.t comes to stay on the target scent.
Pairing your words with the video you linked (I've watched it already ) gives me a crystal clear picture of what I am working to achieve. I am happy to say that I don't have too far to go but I will now be very able to hone the objective for my training in a more precise direction. Thanks for all your advise on this topic. Maybe soon I will be able to post a video of my own that you could critique for me?
I am doing the regular stuff pretty well; building searches, cars. I will be gearing toward searching for substances underground (similar to mine detection), once the spring thaw gets rolling.
