Jeter's incontinence issue continues. The frustrating part (in addition to the fact that I cant just relax on the couch with him like I used to) is that it has no pattern or reason to it.
He doesn't drink an unusual amount of water yet he urinates often. I let him out a lot because I want to try and fend off him leaking or dripping involuntarily. He jumps into our bed in the middle of the night after not being out for hours and he has no problem. No leaking, yet he could have peed 10 minutes ago and he lays next to me on the couch and he gets up and there is urine there.
I tried noticing if its only when he is close to me or at specific times of the day and like I said it follows no pattern, rhyme or reason. Some days seem to be better than others and I am at my whits end.
Of course I can keep him off the furniture and make it a little less stressful for myself but I have another dog and they are both used to being very affectionate with the whole family. The entire dynamic of the house changes if I have to keep these dogs on the floor. Besides...i am finding drip marks on the rugs and floors too.
You may recall that Jeter had the mast cell tumor removed and I spoke to the vet about this issue and we decided to do a wait and see. Maybe some of the meds he got during the procedure created this reaction. Its been months since the tumor was removed and other than a slight lump (swelling) on his right side he has recovered perfectly.
The vet said the swelling is a reaction to an injection and could take months to go away.
I don't want to pay ridiculous amounts of $ to have a bunch of tests done to watch my vet shrug his shoulders when it comes to the incontinence issue.
My eight year old spayed female has an incontinence issue and takes a very inexpensive medication which works perfectly. It only required a conversation with the vet; no tests.
I have no idea if it would work on a male, but I'd recommend calling your vet and have a discussion with him. You might be looking at a very simple, inexpensive solution.
Is the urine coming out of his penis? There is no chance that it is coming out of an area near his belly button?
There is a condition called "patent urachus" which I have seen.
I would call your nearest vet school and ask to speak to a small animal urologist -- not a resident, a doctor with some age on him. Ask what would be the "differential diagnosis of urinary incont. in a young castrated male dog". This will give you a place to start working with your local person.
Perhaps some testosterone might tone up his bladder sphincter-but I am just guessing here.
I believe this is pretty uncommon in male dogs.
Thanks Barbara & Betty...yes its coming from his penis. I am 99% sure. I didn't even know dogs have belly buttons. he has what looks like an incision scar where his belly button would be if on a human. Is that it?
Now I need to vent...I called the vet to have this discussion and of course the receptionist answered the phone and she has the personality of a wet mop. When she informed me that my vet wont be in until Saturday I asked for the other vet but didn't remember her name so I said "can I speak to ...I forgot her name I'm sorry". The receptionists reply..."Whats the problem?" With a nasty tone in her voice like she couldn't be bothered. I explained the problem and she told me that no one will call me until tomorrow because she already left for the day.
I have 2 dogs and I have spent a small fortune at this vet and I am thinking maybe its time for a change.
I personally wouldn't change vets because of an unprofessional receptionist - IF I was happy with the vet and IF the receptionist wasn't ALWAYS hard to deal with.
When they call tomorrow (this isn't an emergency so I can understand that part), after you discuss your issue about the dog, politely and without exageration, tell the vet how their receptionist was over the phone. "Knowing she is the first contact your clients have with your office, I thought you might want to know that when I called yesterdday, blah, blah, blah." Keep it short and to the point.
If she is ALWAYS like that and you don't love the vet, than it is a no-brainer.
Being a receptionist is really hard. People are really mean to them ALL day long. I have had customers that will make the receptionist cry, then bring me presents and act like the nicest person in the world.
There is another breed-specific board I belong to where a lot of people use Sudafed for incontinence. I don't have any personal experience with it, but maybe someone else here has heard of its use for this problem.
Is mast cell a hormone-receptive cancer that would rule out the use of testosterone?
Also, in your previous post a couple months ago about Jeter's cancer and incontinence, it was suggested to rule out a prostate problem. I'm not clear if that has been done.
