This month's edition of The Whole Dog Journal has a very comprehensive multiple page discussion on all the causes of canine itchies-- diagnosis, symptoms, tests, meds, allergies, you name it.
This subject is such a popular one that it's worth seeking out the article. Print subscribers have access to the online content as well. Good stuff.

Is it safe to assume this is available at the typical big box pet stores?

I don't know. But I doubt it. I'd go on line whole-dog-journal.com and subscribe and then read it on line until your subscription kicks in. It really is the best (only) publication out there that consistently provides intelligent content on dog health, training issues, sports, etc. They accept no advertising so the content is completely unbiased. (no, I don't get any commission!) but I am a fan.
this is not a glossy mag. It's more like a newsletter format. This months edition is only 24 pages, which is typical. But at least you don't have to look at ads for Beneful and designer dog sweaters.

I completely agree with Tracy. It is the best monthly publication out there, and I love that there is no advertising.
100% information, no BS.
My only regret was that I didn't subscribe to it sooner, than one year ago. But you can get the back issues if you want too.
My favorite thing is that they have the binder holes already there, so perfect for storing in a three ring binder for referencing back to them.

I'm a new subscriber to WDJ, too, and like Joyce, I wish I had done it a long time ago. The price is very reasonable and you get both the monthly printed issue, plus access to everything online.

Me too. Big time!
I just received the "Itching to be well" issue, and I thought it was excellent. (Translate: I didn't disagree with a single point. )
It's unheard-of for a magazine to present the allergy options and symptoms so accurately and straightforwardly, IMO. Most magazine articles about dogs' allergies leave me tearing my hair out.
This is also the magazine with the annual "good food bad food" lists. And it's the magazine where Mary Straus gained her present well-deserved status.
AND the magazine prefers raw, but understands that it's not for everyone and carefully assesses all the options, from canned to dehydrated to frozen to kibble (in separate articles).
Not taking ads means that they have zero stroking to do, and no big name is left off "bad" lists because of advertising dollars.
Two thumbs up!! I have about a two-foot stack of them.

One of my favorite parts in the allergy article was the description of the so-called tests for food allergies in dogs (I mean aside from the strict elimination diet, the ONLY test at the present time for identifying a dog's food allergens or even whether he has food allergies). Basically, what they said was "no one but the manufacturers thinks these tests are worth the paper they're printed on."

You know the really cool thing? I had learned all the stuff that was in that article all here at Leerburg from you Connie and from all the allergy posts from others.
I just smiled to myself while reading the article!
Kudos to Leerburg and you Connie for all I have learned about allergies, food, etc etc.
I give all the credit to this forum for all the wealth of knowledge that exists, right at our fingertips!
Glad to hear you subscribed today Barbara!
