Hi a few months back my dog went off into some bushes for a bit and wasn't coming when called which is highly unusual. She eventually came only a few minutes really but she was staggering and would not go after toy, lethargic, and eventually collapsed. Thank God I was at the dog park and someone helped carry my dog while I called the vet and someone else ran ahead to get my car and back it up for me. True saints. The vet did all the tests and all that came back was an extremely low blood sugar. But no reason for it. She perked up with whatever they gave her and I took her home that night. I was baffled and asked if this could be over exercise and was told no, we concluded she must have ate something and been poisoned. She had eaten that morning and exercise wasn't overly more than usual. She had missed a few days of exercise prior.
Fast forward today. She went for an average walk yesterday, an hr or so very mild hike. This morning, long walk/beach/swim, and this aftn same thing. The days prior this no exercise as she had cut pad. She hadn't been fed today before walks.
She takes off to those bushes again and im annoyed and my friend says those are the same bushes as last time you should call her, so I do, she had been in them maybe 1 or 2 min tops. She keeps trying to sneak off again to different bushes. I leash her. I let her off, she starts heading to car, usually she wants me to throw toy more. She goes after toy but seems more intent to get to car.
We stop at pet store on way home, she doesn't want to get out of car, im thinking shes cold as she was shaking at the beach. She is walking odd in store, im growing concerned now but still, she walks kinda hunched when shes cold so im not sure. She will take a treat. She is just off so I put her back in car. She wont jump into car. I give her a honey pack like vet said and we go home.
I dry her off, turn heat on and feed her, which she gobbles down. I added rice coz she has had bloody diarreaha last couple days. I think its coz shes on kibble and has been gassy lately. I think maybe shes dehydrated so I mix some soup and water and she drinks it. I giver her some saltine crackers. In a little while she seems much better, shows interest in toy, heads up.
Still waiting for back to 100%. Prepared to go to emerg if it goes south but seems to be improving. First incident was far worse than this time but still concerned it happened again.
My questions:
Cold? First instant was in summer so I don't think it was hypothermia.
Why does she go try to hide when shes sick?
Poisoned? Twice seems too weird.
Low blood sugar? What caused this
Overexercise? She didn't do anymore than the other dogs there, she swims a lot more though. Her springer spaniel pal doesn't seem to get as cold as her though.
Bloody direahha related or not?
Is it when she goes a few days without exercise than goes back at it?
Sorry for the epic post but I am at a loss as to what this is and how to prevent it as I dk what it even is!!
Thanks for any insight!!
