There is an awful foltering going on. I have these information from Avaaz, an Organisation, which informs about various ongoing evil conditions in this world. They absolutely need lots of signatures. People can also spend money, f they want to, but their very happy f they get as many signature as possible. It is a serious organization, I rececieve their messages over the Swiss embassy.

They can get as many signature as they want but Chinese only care what other Chinese have to say and barely even then. To the Chinese the rest of the world's opinion is irrelevant.
Good luck with that. While I personally find the practice of using dogs for food to be repugnant, there are lots of folks around the world who aren't too crazy about the food we eat in the Western world either. Our practice of eating beef and pork is looked down upon in other religions and parts of the world and I would resist their efforts to change our culture. Unless it involves an endangered species, it's probably not wise to impose the values of our culture on others unless we want them to do the same to us.
Sorry if that comes across as somewhat harsh. I'm ex military, have lived all over and have seen how easy it is for folks to judge other cultures and the hazards of imposing our values on theirs. I totally agree with you that I wish no one would use these truly precious creatures for food but there's probably not much that can be done.

Cathy, yes I understand what you mean. But you must know, that this organization works worldwide. They also fight against other deplorable states and have had very often success, because political authorities react if the expression of indignation comes from a vast number of people.
China is not anymore closed off and it depends pretty much of it's prestige in the rest of the world. I think we should open our mouth if we can not agree with something, even if we perhaps don't succeed, we have at least tried.

No, Greg, it does not come across harsh at all. I do respect the opinion of other people and in this case mine is not so different from your's and Bob's.
I too eat meat, which means I'm actually killing animals, only let others do the job.
So what I wrote may come across probably hypocritical. But I do not criticize an other culture for eating the meat of another species of animals than we do.
What I criticize is the way how it is done for this festival. The dogs are bludgeoned to death or exsanguinated.
We now can say, atrocities when slaughtering animals happen in our countries too. But at least this is illegal and so we can try to do something against. As long as it is legal, no chance.
You can with good reason object, that in our countries many things are legal, which shouldn't be, e.g. the awful transport of slaughter animals and lots of other inacceptable things.
I do not think we are better and I'm used to open my mouth in my own country (Switzerland), where you can find enough to criticize. I went to demonstrate with other people and would do it again, no matter in which country, if we find something inacceptable.
That's why I gave my signature in this case, not because I have something against the Chineses or an other people.
