A 14-month old Louisville girl has died after being attacked by her family's pit bull in their home. The dog, "Sig" suddenly bit the back of Kylee Johnson's head and wouldn't let go. The coroner says that's what killed the little girl.
Metro Police say it was an accident and don't plan to file charges. The dog will be euthanized in 9 days.
A doctor from Metro animal services says un-neutered pit bulls should not be around children.
After two pit bull attacks this summer the Charlestown city council wants dog owners to more strictly control their animals. The council passed a new vicious animal ordinance Monday night.
The ordinance will force owners of animals with a history of attacking humans or animals to buy $100,000 worth of liability insurance. The animals must also be kept behind a secure fence or cage.
The ordinance came after two separate attacks by pit bulls on the same street.
Michael Lindley's hand is still in a cast. Two weeks ago he tried to pull a pit bull off his small dog. "My ring finger is shattered into several pieces," Lindley said. "Kleinert and Kootz had to put pins in it to keep it together. Puncture wounds in the palm of my hand, top of my hand and middle finger."
One city councilman says Indiana towns cannot prohibit certain breeds of dogs. Some other cities, like Denver, have banned pit bull ownership altogether.
I still like Chris's idea of felons not being allow to own or harbor a pit bull. I guess that sounds like breed specific stuff again. But I will say after doing what I do for a living I know first hand how many pits you could take away from idiots that are breeding them as fast as they can and selling them to other idiots that do the same thing.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
Not much detail on this attack, except for the victim being a toddler.
I guess it was just an "accident" that the dog and toddler were allowed to be in close enough contact for this to happen - and typically, the stupid family adults will never be held accountable for their idiot behavior and poor judgement.
I guess as long as it's only your own dog killing your kids, there's no harm, right?
Scorecard:
One dead child
One dead dog
One set of stupid parents/ dog owners - off scott free.
I do not know about scott free, can you imagine what the parents are going through knowing that their baby died and they could have possible prevented that death. If you ask me that has got to be hell on earth.
Brad,
you're assuming that the parents even give a crap. If they had one iota of brains or responsibilty, they never would have put a toddler in that situation to begin with with.
Honestly, the parents will be blaming everyone for this *except* themselves, I'm sure. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
I have seen so many of these stories that I am starting to wonder if these parents are all operating off the same screwed up brain. I feel the most sorry for the poor children that lose their lives due to the ignorance of their parents. Everyone gets so wrapped up in consoling the "poor parents" that they ignore the fact that they created the dangerous situation to begin with. I know the laws vary from state to state, but I wish someone would start charging these parents with felony child neglect. I know it can't bring the children back, but maybe it would start causing others to think.
Janelle, everyone is not concerned about consoling the "poor parent", in fact given my experince as a former prosecuter I never met anyone who was interested in consoling a "poor parent". My initial reacton (like most people) is anger at the idiocy of the adult who is careless with the dog, or gun or whatever that cost a child his life or well being.
I make my living suing people whose negligent conduct hurts someone (yes that includes dog attacks). Most of these people are not bad people they are just guilty of exercising incredibly bad judgemet for a period of about 30 seconds in their life and in that 30 seconds their "stupidity" ends up hurting or killing some innocent person.
For decent people who make a tragic mistake it is hell, if you have anything which resembles a soul, to know your stupidity (and we have all been stupid at one time or another) was responsible for injuring your own child or any child.
Unfortunately, Will is right, there are individuals who care for nothing but themselves and criminal penalties are necessary for this group of people. Generally you do not need new laws as there are laws already on the books to punish as a felony criminally negligent conduct. In fact if the conduct is egregios enough you can prosecute the person for murder.
I just had an incident like this occur about 20 min. from my home a couple of months ago. In all the media coverage there was, the only thing that was discussed was how dangerous pit bulls are and how tragic the situation is. Never once did anyone say, "Children should not be allowed to be around dogs unsupervised, especially those that have shown aggression before." Instead of the blame being put on the parents for allowing such a dangerous situation to occur, you hear about the danger of pit bulls. I do not dispute the fact that some pit bulls are dangerous. However, as long as people continue to rant about that and not discuss the aspects of proper parenting and dog ownership, the incidents are going to continue. It is tragic, but I have very little sympathy for the parents. My sympathy lies with the child. This could have been prevented by having the good sense to use a kennel or crate properly. I still stand by what I said and I am sorry you disagree.
Don't be sorry if I where picking a jury in a dog attack case I would want you on it as you do not have a lot of sympathy for irresponsible dog owners. Given the fact I generally represent victims of someones stupidity I can hardly complain about that.
