Has anyone used a spray bottle on their dogs for whiny behaviour? Either straight water or a mild vinager solution?
Example: dog is whining (demanding dinner, or upset about being in crate etc..), command "quiet", if dog doesn't comply, spray with water.
Is this cruel or not?
Every single one of my Malinois whine like Canary birds!
I just tell them to "Shuddup!" and thump the top of the crate LOL, usually works... for a little while anyways
Hey Sam, I have used a similar method for growling. My dog growls at nothing most times. I think she sees her reflection in the sliding glass door and she started to growl all the time. I tried everything to get her to stop, but nothing seemed to work. I finally got the smallest squirt gun I could find. So that I could have it hidden in my hand for when she started to growl. I only had to squirt her about 5 times before the problem disappeared. I don't think the spray bottles would be that effective because if your carrying the damn thing around they won't growl. And if you don't carry it around you timing goes out the door.
Good luck
I have a dobe who whines like my little sister, what you need to do is teach your dog the quiet comand, I actually had to teach my boy to "speak" and then teach the quiet comand later, lots of rewards in the begining, then when he has the comand down you can use it when he's in the crate. Useing a spray bottle or squirt gun for corections can back fire down the road. This method also makes training the gaurd much easier. A good NO! and a smack on top of the crate has worked for all my other dogs though

yes, the smack on the crate does work good! What about when dog is not in crate and whining? The reason I ask if this is cruel is that one of my dogs responds very well with one quirt (sits down and is quiet), whereas the other one, good grief you'd think the world came crashing down on him!! Runs and hides and makes me feel like I'm the devil. hahaha.

My dogs first introduction to the garden hose was not a good one. He freaks out anytime I walk towards the hose
Every dog will need a different level of corection. One may only require a stern "NO" to do the job. I wouldn't recomend useing the same level of corection for both given the difference in reactions. Back in the day I tryed the squirt gun idea, and ended up with a dog I couldn't hose down in the summer to cool him off or bathe useing the hose, it was a pain!

Ok, i have three bitches that are in heat now, one going out of the cycle, one in middle of it and one starting. I have one house mutt that is howling like someone is butchering him (neighbour asked me if he did hurt himself or something and has mad sparks in his eyes. On the good side i can save food on him this few weeks Only that he eats about fistfull of kibble when 'normal'.
Stupid, youngest, started howling recently - this is big dog with deep woice - so you can hear him on the other hill when walking other dogs than him... such injustice (sp, is that a word?)
