hi everyone:
Okay, here is the deal. I train my kelpie in agility. When we first started, I wanted to tug with her as a reward. I bought a tug toy, and the result was a dog who simply got angry- she would tug for a little and then bite at me, and then she just wouldn't tug. So, then we started using a frisbee. Now, she LOVES frisbee- this is her favorite thing now. The tug toy just sits and collects dust. The frisbee, she will tug with, BUT, she still appears reticent to tug for whatever reason- sometimes. I am trying to work on focus with this girl and I know the Flinks dvd talks about specific tug toys and balls, but my dog just isn't a real fan of balls, or tug toys. It looks almost like she takes the tug TOO seriously, and it makes her very agitated?
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Julie
Hmm... how certain are you that your dog fully accepts you as her leader?
My lab gets VERY aggressive with his tug. People that walk in when I'm playing tug with him think I'm being attacked by a viscious dog. Growling, snarling, head thrashing, etc. But the difference is, that with eye contact and a single "drop it" he releases instantly and JUMPS into a sit to await his next command in hopes of starting the game again. He has zero rank-issues with me or any other person in the family. But I wouldn't let him get that worked up if that weren't the case because he does REALLY get into it.
Thank you for posting this answer. You may have hit the nail on the head. I have, after looking at her behaviour with other situations, learned that indeed she is thinking that she needs to tell ME how to handle things. Since putting in ground work with her, she is much better, but now I still need to learn how to tug with her, now that our relationship is better. I am telling her that she is a good girl for tugging, which seems to lighten her mood, but is there anything else I can do to help this along?
Thanks
Julie
