Cut the lawn, cut the brush, limb up the trees, bomb the house or call the exterminator. As organic as I love to be it's not worth the lyme disease or other tick related maladies.
I personally use lines of dry soap to keep the creepy crawlies out of my house but I don't have to deal with many hitchhikers like ticks.

Just watch out, I hear they like to crawl over the ceiling at night and drop onto sleeping victims.
When I moved into this house it was filled with spiders. Found a couple ticks on the ground too (dead, but HUGE). The house was surrounded by a hay field. Soon as the guy came to collect hay for his ponies I kept it cut short. Seen a couple ticks on the dogs since then (the months I didnt apply FrontLine Plus) because there's sections of long grass that can't be gotten to with a mower, but once the house had been "lived in" for a few weeks the spiders and bugs started to disappear and keeping the hay field cut down along with the rest of the lawn seems to have done the trick.
But if there are ALOT of ticks in the house (I only ever saw 2), I would certainly consider contacting an exterminator.
As for Lyme Disease. I'm not sure about your area, but in Belgium only 10% of ticks have it and a tick has to be on its host for more than 24 hours I believe in order to transmit it, and even then it's not a sure-thing.

I always try organic first but if your house is infested it is time to call the professionals.
If you just rented the house I would contact the landlord. He should cover the cost I would think.

I always try organic first.
So what do you use then? What is an organic way of controlling ticks and the like? Dish soap in a bucket on the deck? Can someone throw a bit more meat to add to Betty's bone?
I always figured if you had lots of spiders they would keep insect populations in check?

I have heard that food grade Diatomaceous Earth works great for organic flea and tick control. I have not used it yet but will be using it soon since ticks are really bad here this year.
If you are interested in learning more here is the link that was given to me. They have a lot of good information.

Good Luck!

Well gee whiz. Who the heck wants enough spiders to keep ticks under control? Especially in the house.
I use D.E. around the outside of the house. You may buy the non ingestive type at any large garden center. I believe a link is already listed below your post. Dogs are also given a quick once over every couple of days with a flea comb in order to catch a potential problem before it becomes one.
Infestations of ticks inside the house I would not mess around with but would call in an expert.
Spiders I kill. The less chance they have to eat bugs the happier I am. Florida spiders are not cute and cuddley.
Don't forget to treat everywhere when you treat the house. Places like your car ect.

Ditto!
Jeez, I didn't think this thread could get any worse and then you've got to bring spiders into it?
