Well. I wanted to post this and hopefully my two little ones will give me five minutes to do so. Jackie, the dog, and I had a long talk. As usual she just listened and I came to the conclusion that I am going to kick her butt, or, feed her a steak dinner and take her for the ride.
I am moving so, after I sen dmy children to bed I quickly try and do all those things that you can't do during the day. I needed to run some items to the garage. Jackie needs to come with me because if the racoons come up in the back yard she will bark in the house and surely wake the kids. I tied her out and made my way moving things between the porch and garage. I was acutly aware of any possible late night dog walkers, and here they came.
I walked over to Jackie just as she went into full code red. I grabbed her by the chest front shoulders and picked her up, turned her and gave her a good sqeeze while it all happened. I stayed absolutely sure of myself and firmly, without yelling, commanded 'leave it' all the while staring her down when she would look my way. I must have stood there saying leave for some time but I repeated it each time she tried to look at the dogs passing by. It must have lloked great because the people passing by made sure they yelled " you don't have to be so cruel" as they passed. Jackie never yelped, but she gave a slight whine and changed direction towards me by the time that I had concluded that she could handle herself.
People...if you could have seen the look on my dogs face you would have busted out laughing. She never once ran forward to see where the dogs were or went. She never even tried for a scent. Not a scent! I told her to stand and that is exactly what she did without looking away from ME. Man, her ears were just all twisted trying to recover from what just happened.
I had to keep control of my emotions. I wanted to reach down and scratch her and give her all of that fluffy puppy love kind of goo goo hugging but I remained strong.
She was beyond baffled. She was no longer herself. She was without foundation.
For the next ten trips or so back to the garage, Jackie kept her eyes, ears, and feet in my direction!!! Unheard of!!!
At the end, when I was finished, she went for the door, and, waited for me first, without command. She then waited to go upstairs, without command.
If you have ever potty trained a child, then you know how excited and how wonderful she responded.
I am crazed about doing this again!!! I know that she has not been cured but, darn, did she have a life changing moment to think about!!!!
A gave her some good girlies and she went to bed!!
Hell have no fury!!! So true.
CRABTREE:
Thank you for the kennel information. Being out in the woods you sound like you had the kind kennel problems that I might have. I will keep your information in my brain. Thanks.
<<<To ad to the earlier post. My dog weighs about 80 pounds. I can stand her up or roll her. Other than my body weight, I have no real strength. I rely on my voice. But, to each their own. Some people I know buy harness collars that go around the body of the dog. You can pull up on the harness for attention. I would worry about owning a dog that could each you for breakfast.>>>
