wow! thanks I really need that. I am always trying to learn more about caring for my pups. They are a group of great little dogs. They have big hearts!
Both of those are great Web sites! They are in my favorites list and I refer to them often. They are full of information for dog-owners wanting to get away from the commercial kibble route.
This evening I was reading some info on intestinal issues in dogs and I came across a vets answer to someone whose dog they were going to do an elimination diet on.
The vet says he recommends this if they are trying to rule out IBS. Hmmm.
When the vet I have gets back from vacation, I am going to make an appointment to talk with him re: the questions Connie had given me. I wonder if it could be that they are suspecting IBS in cody. Will find out. and learn much more about the new vet I went to.
hmmmmm.
the situation I expect will be resolved soon.
But he does not have the common symptoms of IBS...
Intermittent bouts of diarrhea or soft stool, higher frequency of BM's, small BM's, straining, abdominal distension/bloating/pain, gas....
?
I'm really thinking hard on this now- I don't think any of the vet's I've worked for has ever even considered IBS or IBD w/o diarrhea.

Edit reason: thinking...
yes, I know he doesn't have any of those symptoms. The emergency vets were trying to eliminate different conditions in the beginning.
Here is the print out they sent home with me when cody was first ill.
" We have submitted blood work for a recheck of the serum chemistry and CBC, for an ACTH stimulation test, and for malabsorption/maldigestion panel. We have also preformed an abdominal ultrasound today which was fairly unremarkable. We will begin treatment for gastroesophagel reflux disease while we are awaiting the return of the results.
At that time they gave him his meds. Metoclopramide 5mg and Sucralfate 250 .
then they end with this: Pending the results of the testing, we may also consider changing Cody's diet to Hill's Z/D or Purina Ha. We may also consider instituting a probiotic (Prostora or Flortiflora)."
Now they do not believe he needs a probiotic. they feel it won't hurt him but he doesn't need it.
That was were we left off. then his blood work showed the deficiency of the cabalamin and folate levels. Then we give him the b12 injections.
His stool sample showed a parasite. I can't find the name of the parasite. But the vet stated the parasite is not the cause, it usually passes right thru dogs.the vet says it comes from eating raw meat. I looked it up and that is not the only way you can get it. Eating the poop of other animals that have the parasite can cause a dog or other animal to injest the parasite which they then pass along in their poop. even breathing/sniffing where the other animals have eliminated can cause the dog or predator to injest it.
We are retesting for the parasite and doing another blood workup in a month.
So, that is it. then they started talking about him being possible allergic to his food and it has stayed on that topic since then.

been thinking of the events that led up to cody being sick. there is nothing different except that he had a rabies shot. I looked up reactions and this is what it said: Other reported side effects from the rabies vaccination include autoimmune diseases, allergies, skin problems, digestive disorders, eating inappropriate materials, like paper, and fibrocarcinomas, a type of cancer, at the injection site.
So will present this to the vet also. I am not sure this is what happened but Cody had his rabies on 2/15 and was taken to the hospital on 2/27. Just a thought.
Will let you know how it turns out. thanks sharon
