Totally agree on demeanor, Aaron. For instance, I took Missy in last week because she was just "off". She'd been off while I'd been gone for several days (not really unusual) but when she didn't improve when I got home, I took her in for a check-up. Got her on some pain meds and she was almost back to normal that evening.
On the flip side, Kenzi got into some spoiled food several days ago. Kenzi has a really sensitive digestive tract. The next morning, diarrhea, tinged with blood. Normally this would be a big deal, but it's happened before with her (and been to the vet before)and since she was her normal active self otherwise she got some pepto and a 24 hour fast. I then reintroduce some bland food with no issue., and she's almost back on her normal diet with no other issues.
So I take into account what is normal for the dog based on their personality and past experience and proceed from there. What may be normal for one dog might warrant a trip to the vet for another.
