Owners of vicious dog were cautious

The owners of a pit bull that mauled a woman in Itta Bena last week knew to be careful around him.
Whenever Magdaline Williams would bring “Face” food, she stopped short of the dirt warning track that marked the end of the pit bull’s reach, pushing the bowl toward him with a pole the rest of the way.
Caution was certainly warranted, as the hospital trip and stitches on Becky Lee Grimes’ right leg attest. The dog broke free of its chain and attacked Grimes on June 20 as she cut through the back yard at 217 Morris St.
The dog’s name was “King,” but they called him “Face” because he had two different colors, brown and white, on his face.
They say Williams’ brother, Robert Earl Williams, who lives in Ohio, sent Face to protect his mother’s house. The dog has been there since about 2002.
“We was feeding him. We were taking care of him,” said Hattie Williams, 77, who is Robert Earl Williams’ mother and the owner of the home.
The dog wore a collar, which was connected by a lock to a chain. The chain was attached to a stake driven into the ground near a large tree.
Williams said Grimes, who lives two streets away, walked up to her while she was sitting on the porch that Sunday afternoon: “She was drinking, and she said, ‘Can I go through the shortcut?’”
Williams said she told her she could use the route but to stay near the fence, away from the dog.
She said Grimes walks with a limp, and she thinks the combination of whisky, her stomping foot and a stranger’s face incited the dog.
“If he ain’t never seen your face before, he’ll do that,” Magdaline Williams said.
Williams was sitting on the back porch when the attack happened.
“I heard my mama yelling, saying, ‘Go see what’s wrong!’”
When she went around to the side of the house, Grimes was sitting near a car. She wasn’t bleeding badly, but her leg was torn up, Williams said.
“I’m glad he didn’t get to her neck and kill her,” she said.
Williams went inside and retrieved a towel and peroxide. Meanwhile, her mother went to get Face.
“The dog came to me like he was trying to tell me something,” Hattie Williams said.
He didn’t seem angry, and she grabbed his collar, pulling him onto the front porch. The dog lay at the doorstep and didn’t get upset until police came, she said.
It took officials about three hours to apprehend Face, and the dog bit a firefighter during the process.
Initially, Itta Bena officers said Face would be held for two weeks. However, he escaped from his 9-foot-high cage at the Leflore County Humane Society after one day and has been a fugitive since.
A friend called and told Hattie Williams that Face had been shot and killed after his escape, but she wants proof.
“Nobody told me nothing about my dog,” she said.
Representatives from the Humane Society and Itta Bena Police Department could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said this morning said he had been told by a reliable source that someone had fatally shot the dog.
“I haven’t heard a name, but I’ve been assured that he went to ‘Dog Heaven,’” Banks said.
The Williamses say lots of people cut through the back yard and that the attack was a freak accident.
Itta Bena has a “vicious animal” ordinance, but Hattie Williams said she is not aware of being in any trouble.
“I ain’t never been in court or nothing like that,” she said.
If Williams ever gets the body back, she would like to bury Face under the tree where he stayed.
She’s not sure if she’ll get another dog to replace him. END QUOTE
