A short while back, just after Harry died, Jamie, (number one son) found out he and his girlfriend were going to have a baby, it had been a happy accident, but the timing couldn't have been worse, they were waiting to complete on a house sale and had decided they were going to have a short holiday to blow away the cobwebs of what had been a rough time what with losing Haz and then the shock of the baby, however, the house sale fell through, which meant the holiday was put on hold, then they lost the baby, it was a grim time.
All of these things in such quick succession made Jamie re-valuate his life and he was particularly miserable in his job, as was I.
I was scrutinizing the jobs vacant column in our local newspaper and read a tiny advert regarding a job that would be a fantastic opportunity for Jamie with real prospects and a big pay hike, he thought nothing ventured etc and decided to take a leap and apply for it, and despite the mass of applicants and against all the odds, he got the job.
This job entailed a week of training way up at the top of Scotland in a small town in Aberdeen, he went up there on Sunday at very short notice and was assigned to an older chap who was about to retire and had agreed to take Jamie under his tutelage for the week.
Today shortly after he picked him up, the chap started to feel unwell, and complained of feeling sick and went a grey colour, as Jamie started to ask him if he wanted to pull over, the guy threw up, started fitting, jamming his foot down hard on the accelerator; Jay pulled the handbrake on then the chap blacked out, stopped breathing and started a gagging reflex, Jamie called 999 and the operator patched through for an ambulance just as the chap started swallowing his tongue, choking and gasping for breath, the heart slowed to a beat every ten seconds and then he started the awful death rattle and was instructed by the operator how to keep him alive till the paramedics arrived.
The chap is now in hospital in intensive care but stable, and this is where I think fate came in to it.... because Jamie remembered the god awful, gut wrenching and spine chilling noise Haz made as his life slipped away, he knew the man was dying, and was able to stay calm and keep his tongue from choking him while the ambulance arrive, all the time talking to the operator.
If the house sale hadn't fallen through, if they hadn't lost the baby causing him to make a life changing decision, if we weren't both so unhappy in our jobs that made me look at even the smallest of adverts, because the holiday that would have taken him out the country when the job was advertised never happened due to the sale falling through, he would never have been in Aberdeen and the man would have fallen ill at the wheel of a car on a remote Highland road with no one around, the paramedics said if Jay hadn't have been with him he would have certainly died out there in the middle of nowhere.
I have always believed everything in life happens for a reason, this has reinforced my belief!
