I have a RAW question - how many days a week can you feed a dog eggs?
I have so many eggs that I could give each of my dogs an egg a day and still have plenty left over for my family.
I just want to make sure that I wouldn't encounter some health problem by doing this.

i dont' know if theres a "technical" answer, but my dogs get eggs 3-4 days a week sometimes. I don't always give the shell.
growing up, we raised chickens, and my grandpa gave his pit bulls 5-6 eggs each every single day over the dogs cheapo kibble(he didn't like giving shells though).

Researchers used to think that there was enough biotin in the yolk to make up for the avidin in the raw white.
But I have now read (in some dot-edu articles) that there is nowhere near enough.
It said that the biotin amount in an average egg was not even close to enough to neutralize all the avidin in the raw white.
So now I limit raw eggs to a couple a week per dog. Of course, you could also separate the whites and cook them, which breaks down the avidin. Or you could supplement with biotin (Vitamin B7). Or what many folks do is boil a bunch of eggs at once and use those.
I cook the eggs. Easy peasy!
I would not give daily raw whole eggs, though, because I would be creating a daily biotin deficiency.
PS
Liver (3 ounces has about 30 mcg biotin) is a good food source.
Also, I would not leave on all (or even hardly any) of the shells if giving eggs regularly because of the amount of calcium in one shell.

i just can't give eggs every day because my dogs will get the runs...im not sure how my grandpa did it, but then too, his dogs stayed chained up outside, so i dont' think he cared much or even noticed if that many eggs gave his dogs the runs.

Hi Connie
I was just wondering what the effects of biotin deficiency would be? I have been giving my two dogs one raw egg each (with the shell), usually every other day (for at least two years). They have such shiny coats & I always thought it was from the raw eggs (they also get salmon oil so maybe that contributes).

I wish I knew more about biotin deficiency. I have read that it's pretty a very multi-species malady. For dogs, and especially shepherd-types, dry or flaky skin, thin coat, excessive shedding, intense scratching or biting of skin, poor claw condition, weakened soft tissue which may contribute to HD and other joint disorders.
Pitcairn did not think that biotin deficiency was at all common in dogs, though, so who knows. I don't know .... I just err on the side of caution, I guess.

-or you could just cook the eggs - still very digestible to the dog. We feed at least an egg a day per dog - more in the winter.

Wow...
So glad this was posted. I have been wondering why my dog was shedding so much, and was looking into whether 1 egg every day would help it. Now I realize the problem was too MANY eggs a week, not too few.
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. |

Absolutely! I give cooked eggs when I have them, without reservation. Particularly soft-boiled, which one of mine just loves (but another gets the runs, so it's an individual thing ) , and which is a great food.
It takes me about 4 minutes to make a pan of soft-cooked eggs.
