Product Description
Our slip collars are made from soft 1/4 inch NO-STRETCH hollow core nylon rope. This collar makes an excellent training collar or backup for a prong collar.
Slip collars have 2 metal ring on each end of the rope. It is close to, but different than a dominant dog collar (DDC) . A DDC has a ring on one end and a clip on the other end of the rope. There is a floating ring that can slide back and forth between both ends.
A slip collar has to go over the dogs head to get it on, where as a DDC is able to wrap around the neck and clip on. (see the video). Dogs that have big heads have necks that are much smaller than the dogs head. This results in a slip collar having a lot of slack once its on the dog.
A DDC is a better choice for dog trainers. If a dog owner has a big headed dog they will require a large slip collar just to get over the head, but to do that the collar ends up having a lot of slack when it is down on the neck. That can easily be 5 to 9 incheck of slack. Where as a DDC can be sized so it will only have 1 ti 3 inches of slack. That translates into a handler only having to move the leash a couple of inches to take up slack and deliver a correction, Vs possibly having to take up 9 or 10 inches of slack on a slip collar.
In the end when new trainers ask us, we will also pont them to a Dominant Dog Collar. over a slip collar
When to use a slip lead Vs a Prong Collar Vs a Remote Collar
A slip collar or Dominant Dog Collar should be used on reactive or aggressive dogs. Using a prong collar on a reactive or aggressive dog will only increase the reactivity in the dog. The same applies to an aggressive dog. I produced a video on this subject.
How to Fit the Leerburg Nylon Slip Collar
It can be hard for a new dog trainer to measure the circumference of a dogs head, especially if the dog is squirreling around or it's an untrained dog thats nervous about what you are doing. With a DDC we will use a string to measure the dog s neck , but a string may be too flimsy to try to measure a head and ears. We will use a piece of rope , when you think you have the right measurement, tie the rope in a circle and see if you can sli it over the dogs head.
It is much easier to measure for a dominant dog collar. With a DDC we simply wrap a string around the dogs neck, we measure right up under the jaw and right behind the ears, then simply add 2 or 3 inches to that measurement and that is the size of the DDC to order.
