Getxent Tubes with Leerburg Scent Kits

Leerburg has collaborated with Getxent to create revolutionary scent detection kits. Getxent's patented technology can be used to detect:

  • Explosives
  • Drugs/narcotics
  • Electronic devices
  • Invasive species and plants
  • Medical illnesses
  • ...and more

What are Getxent tubes?

A small tube made of innovative polymer that absorbs and emits target odors, used for training dogs in detection.

Absorb

Absorb target odor

When placed in a contained space with a target item, the Getxent tube will absorb odors.

Emit

Emit target odor

The Getxent tube will emit odor molecules of the target item for up to 6 months.*

Train

Safe for training

Use the Getxent tube for detection training in public spaces.

*6 months corresponds to 2x 1-hour training sessions per week for a Getxent tube that has absorbed an odor for 48 hours. Learn more.

Target Odors

Getxent tubes can simulate large quantities of a target odor. For example, the military may only have access to a small amount of explosives. Getxent tubes can absorb several kgs of the target odor to simulate several tons depending on how long the tube has been exposed to the target sample.

Getxent tubes can absorb a wide variety of scents including (but not limited to) the odors listed below:

  • Drugs: Fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, suboxone, marijuana, nicotine, xylazine
  • Explosives: Ammonium nitrate, C4, gunshot residue, NG dynamite, HMTD, PETN, potassium chlorate, potassium nitrate, RDX, TATP, TNT, black powder, DBSP, semtex
  • Electronic devices: TPPO, damaged lithium batteries
  • Medical illnesses/conditions: COVID-19, cancer, difficile
  • Environmental: Detection of endangered animals (turtle nests), invasive species and plants (bed bugs, American foulbrood)
  • Other: Truffles, currency, essential oils

Impregnated Tube vs. Non-impregnated Tube

The larger tube to the left is after impregnation. The tube gets larger in size when it absorbs odor molecules. The smaller tube is the original size before absorbing any odor.

How to Absorb Target Odors

Getxent tubes should be handled with a pair of tweezers while wearing powder-free nitrile gloves. The process itself will vary depending on the target object and how concentrated you want the odor to be. Processes for each type can be viewed below:

How to absorb odors of drugs, explosives, electronic devices, or other non-living material
+
  1. Place your target odor in a small, clean, and odor-free container with an airtight seal.
  2. Open the package containing Getxent tubes. While wearing disposable gloves, use a pair of tweezers to pick up the Getxent tube.
  3. Place the Getxent tube in the container with the target odor.
  4. Close the airtight container. Depending on how concentrated you want the odor to be, select one of the durations below:
    • Less than 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be less than the target sample.
    • 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be similar to the target sample.
    • More than 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be higher than the target sample. View concentration times.
  5. Open the container. While wearing disposable gloves, use a pair of tweezers to remove the Getxent tube. Store it in a small, clean, odor-free container with an airtight seal. This tube can be used for up to 6 months. These tubes can be washed with tap water to remove dust, mud, or particles which will not affect their odor concentration.
How to absorb odors of live animals, insects, or plants
+
  1. Place the subject in a small, clean, odor-free container. You can leave the container slightly open to allow airflow.
  2. Open the package containing Getxent tubes. While wearing disposable gloves, use a pair of tweezers to pick up the Getxent tube.
  3. Place the Getxent tube in the container with the animal/insect.
  4. Close the container. Depending on how concentrated you want the odor to be, select one of the durations below:
    • Less than 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be less than the subject.
    • 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be similar to the subject.
    • More than 24 hours: The Getxent tube's odor concentration will be higher than the subject. View concentration times.
  5. Open the container. While wearing disposable gloves, use a pair of tweezers to remove the Getxent tube. Store it in a small, clean, odor-free container with an airtight seal. This tube can be used for up to 6 months. This tubes can be washed with tap water to remove dust, mud, or particles which will not affect their odor concentration.
How to absorb odors of a live human
+
  1. While wearing disposable gloves, use a pair of tweezers to pick up the Getxent tube.
  2. Give the Getxent tube to the human subject. The human subject can choose to hold it in their hands, under armpits, behind the knee, etc.
  3. How long the human subject will have to hold the Getxent tube depends on your purpose:
    • For live human tracking: Subject should hold the tube for 5 to 10 minutes.
    • For human disease detection:
      • For experienced dogs: Subject should hold the tube for a few seconds up to a few minutes
      • For training purposes: Subject should hold the tube for 20 minutes.

Training with Getxent Tubes

Once your Getxent tube has absorbed its target scent, you can use it with our Magnetic Odor Box made exclusively for Getxent tubes. With a pair of tweezers, simply place the Getxent tube in the odor box and start your dog's training.

Getxent tubes are safe to use in public settings. They can be hidden underwater and in the soil without absorbing new odors from different environments. After training, remove the Getxent tube with tweezers and place it back in its storage container.

Concentration Levels of Odor in Getxent Tubes

Studies have proven that dogs can detect 10x more or less the concentration of their target scent (view study).

Getxent tubes will have exactly the same odor profile as the target odor. If you find that your dog is treating your Getxent tubes differently from the real material, you may have to adjust the concentration of the odor. The concentrated Getxent tube may have too high or too low of a concentration for your dog to detect. View the table to the left as a guide.

Can I reuse a concentrated Getxent tube?

Unfortunately, Getxent tubes that have already absorbed an odor cannot be reused, even with the same target odor.

You can purchase new Getxent tubes at Leerburg. Each tube comes with its own vial for storage.

How long will concentrated Getxent tubes last?

If the absorption period is longer than 6 hours, Getxent tubes can be used for as long as the duration of the absorption.

For example, if a Getxent tube absorbs its target scent for 48 hours, the Getxent tube can then be used continuously for 48 hours. If you have two 1-hour training sessions per week, you are only using up 2 of those 48 hours. With this routine, the Getxent tube can last for up to 6 months if used consistently.

For absorption periods less than 6 hours, results will vary. Tests have indicated that absorption periods of 20 minutes with COVID-19 individuals were usable for at least 1 hour during training.

How do I wash and store Getxent tubes?

Wash & Care

Unused Getxent tubes are already clean and should not be washed.

If a concentrated Getxent tube has debris, it can be washed with tap water. This will not affect its target scent.

Storage

Concentrated Getxent tubes should be placed in an airtight container. Getxent tubes purchased from Leerburg will come with a glass vial. You can store the tube in this vial after your training sessions. Don't forget to label your vials including the date, absorption duration, and scent!

Concentrated tubes will typically last for as long as it absorbed an odor for (eg. 48 hours of absorption time = 48 hours of continued use). We recommend logging your training sessions to keep track of how long the Getxent tube was used. Learn more about concentration levels.

Unused Getxent tubes have a shelf-life of 36 months. Store them in a cool and dry place. We recommend storing them in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
