The Keeper Collars with the leather strap have a larger adjustable range for neck sizes that fit within each collar size. The leather strap has three holes to allow for more customized size ranges than our Keeper Collar with the plastic snap. This collar would be a better option for dogs with thicker coats or dogs that you may be expecting to fill out a bit more.

A dog with a tape measure around its neck, behind the ears.

As you can see, Willy measures 15.5 inches. If your dog measures 15.5" and is full grown, a 14" collar would work when loosened (orange 14"), or a 15” collar allows for more room if we wish to tighten it (black 15 inch, shown loosened). The green 16” collar would be too big for Willy (green 16 inch). If your dog has a thicker coat or is expected to grow, we suggest opting for the larger size (black 15 inch).

Neck Size Collar Size Width of Collar
13” - 15.5" 12" 3/4"
15” - 17.5" 14" 1"
17” - 19.5" 16" 1"
19” - 21.5" 18" 1"
21” - 23.5" 20" 1"
23” - 25.5" 22" 1"
24.5” - 28" 24" 1"

Every once in a while, we see a new dog training product that blows us away. With that said, let us introduce the Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar. This is one of those products where design, quality, and functionality have all been taken into account.

The Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar is not simply a cover for a prong collar. The prong is built directly into the collar, allowing for unmatched functionality and camouflaging of the prong.

These collars are designed to easily be put on and taken off. Gone are the days of struggling to pinch the prongs together. For those people who do not have a ton of dexterity in their fingers, this is going to be a huge benefit.

Because you are no longer pinching the prongs to put the collar on and take off, you do not have to worry about them eventually wearing out and becoming loose. This also eliminates the worry of your prong coming apart when you need it most. With that, you no longer need to use a backup collar. Leerburg has always recommended using a backup collar with a prong. Simply because if and when the prong fails it will fail when you need it most and maintaining control over your dog in those instances is crucial. With the Keeper Collar, there is no way for the prongs to come apart. Even if they did, the leather flat strap doubles as your back up collar.

Keeper Collars also makes achieving the perfect fit much easier. Prong collars are meant to ride high on the dog’s neck just below the base of the skull. Sizing a standard prong requires adding and removing links, which really limits the amount of adjustability.

The Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar, on the other hand, are completely adjustable. We offer the collars in 1 inch increments that allows you to select the size that closest fits your dog. You can then adjust the length of the pull tab to get a perfect fit on any dog. This also allows you to easily put the collar on and off with the use of the plastic buckle or leather tab and clasp.

Prong collars are an extremely functional training tool, especial when it comes to loose leash walking. Unfortunately, they look menacing and people tend to jump to conclusions about them. Let me preface that with the pinching from a prong causes no damage to your dog’s neck, whereas allowing a dog to pull into a flat collar can put so much pressure on your dog’s trachea, resulting in permanent damage.

However, because of the appearance and an onslaught of uneducated bad publicity about prongs, people who use them correctly are often verbally accosted when taking their dogs for a walk. So if you fall into that category and are tired of the dirty looks from people when safely walking your dog down the street, we recommend taking a look at the Keeper Collars® Hidden Prong Collar.

Additional Considerations

Prong collars do not apply pressure to the dogs trachea, making them a safe alternative to a slip collar, and much safer than allowing your dog to pull into a flat collar which can cause permanent damage to the dogs wind pipe. Instead a prong collar tightens, creating a pinching sensation that is instantly released once the dog “yields to the leash” or stops pulling.

Leerburg recommends using a backup collar any time you are using a prong collar on your dog. For more information on back up collars and why we recommend them check out some of our free streaming videos on the proper use of a prong collar as well as the prong collar leash. We recommend Leerburg’s Dominant Dog Collar.

It is recommended to NOT use these collars with a retractable (flexi) lead.

For more information on how to size a prong collar, read our article here.

This collar is a terrific game changer for myself and my 6-month old Doberman puppy. She pulls like a freight train without a prong collar but the traditional prong is hard for me to take on and off. This buckle prong collar is easy to get on and off. Now my girl walks on her leash like a little lamb and my arm is still attached to my body. Thank you very much.

I suffered a bad accident and had to have the elbow on my dominate arm replaced. It was very hard for me to squeeze the prongs on the regular prong collar. I saw your video and decided to try the keeper collar. What a wonderful product. I can just put the collar on my 60lb Lab and be out the door in no time for our morning walk. I ordered the leather buckle because my dog's neck is 17" and with the martingale insert the size 14 fit her perfectly. This collar has made both of our lives so much easier! Anonymous

We have two Keeper Collars and we love them! Very solid, well made. Much easier to put on and take off than a standard prong, and it looks "friendlier," too, when we're on public trails. (Unfortunately a lot of folks around here have misconceptions about prongs...) If color matters to you, note that the olive green -- or at least the olive green collar we ordered -- has a black leather strap, not tan as shown in the product images. Still beautiful, but a slightly different look.

Excellent collar.

I have been using "Keeper Collars" for about 6+ years and find the quality is well worth the money. I agree there is much less stigma in the use of this collar vs. an uncovered prong collar. People just do not realize or understand that this type of collar is a necessity with a strong breed of dog. The product just blows any collar that is similar right out of the water. It's a wonderful tool for those that need it.

Love both my Keepers! My younger pooch is in between prong collars so this made all the difference in the world. The quick release buckle makes heading out from and returning from walks a breeze and sure saves my fingers. I also enjoy the lack of nasty "prong" comments as we are out. I had been eyeing up the Keeper collar for awhile and was about to reach out to learn your thoughts and there it was, highly recommended, in your shop! So very pleased, thank you.

I rarely write a review on products but had to after purchasing this collar. It is worth every penny I love it. My 2 german shepherds pulled like freight trains on a walk and the prong collars did the trick but were a worry and extra work. With these collars buckle them on and I can take both dogs any place I go on a loose lead. Thanks Leerburg!!

I have Purchased a "Keepercollar" with hidden prongs... The quality is excellent, we are more than happy with this collar. Being able to get the collar on the dog without having to go over the dogs head is a great safety feature. Even my grandchildren can safely get the dog ready now.

Wonderful collars! Great design and workmanship! Function without others giving their opinion equipment choices!

At first, i loved this collar. I even went to the Keeper website and purchased an additional one. They are both a waste of money! I had to use electrical tape to keep the one i bought through Leerburg from going from the size i set it to a larger size. Within a month, the one i purchased directly from the website started fraying and i paid almost $90 for that one. I ended up throwing both away. Money wasted.
