Why use a Polymer Muzzle?

Unlike chrome muzzles, our polymer-coated muzzles do not rust and your dog's tongue will not stick to the muzzle in freezing temperatures. The polymer-coated metal allows the dog to pant, drink, or easily take food treats through the front or sides.

We obviously recommend muzzles for aggressive dogs, but there are many other good reasons to use a muzzle. They are an excellent choice to wear for vet visits, and can be used to condition a reactive dog to safely go on walks. They can also be used as part of a solution to safely groom and/or cut nails, and can be an effective tool to stop your dog from licking wounds or eating rocks or garbage.

40% of the muzzles we sell are returned because customers make mistakes in measuring their dogs for a muzzle. We stock 60 different styles and sizes of muzzles, and selecting the right one for your dog is one of the hardest thing you may have to do as a dog owner.

We will gladly exchange a muzzle for a different size but we cannot pay shipping on muzzle returns and exchanges. We hate to have to take this position, but the number of returns has forced this policy.

We do everything we can to help customers determine what size muzzle to order. We have produced a streaming video on HOW TO MEASURE YOUR DOG FOR A MUZZLE, and we are happy to offer phone consultation.

Even with all of this help, it can still be difficult to pick the correct size. The only fool-proof way of not making a mistake is to either bring the dog to our office or do the best you can with measurements and order several different sizes, then return the muzzles that don't fit. With luck, you should end up with the correct size muzzle. The only downside to this approach is you will have to pay shipping charges to return the muzzles that didn't fit your dog.

If you still need help after reviewing our sizing video and charts, call our office at (715) 235-6502. We are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Customers who purchase a Leerburg muzzle have FREE access to our course titled CONDITIONING YOUR DOG TO A MUZZLE. This course contains 31 short videos explaining how to use reward based training methods to condition a dog to tolerate wearing a muzzle.

How to Measure Your Dog for a Muzzle

Sizing

There are several things you need to know about sizing a muzzle for your dog:

  1. The muzzle should not touch the front of your dog's snout, nor go past your dog's eyes. The muzzle should sit roughly 1/2" below the eyes and 1/2" past the end of the nose. If the muzzle is too long, it will be pushed back on the dog's face and obstruct their line of vision.
  2. The muzzle's circumference must be larger than your dog's "nose or snout circumference." We recommend between one and three inches larger around than your dog's muzzle circumference measurement. If the muzzle is the exact same size as your dog's nose circumference, the dog won't be able to pant. It is very important that you give your dog enough room to pant while wearing the muzzle.
  3. In addition to length and circumference, owners of some breeds (i.e. the bully breeds or flat faced breeds) need to consider the width of their dog's jaw. It is easy to pick a muzzle size with the correct length but the muzzle may not be wide enough to fit the width of the jaw. Call or email our office if you have one of these breeds and need help.

If you are still unsure of the size to choose, measure your dog and call our office at (715) 235-6502 and we will do our best to help you decide the best style and size of muzzle for your dog.

  • Muzzle Length: Measured from end of felt on noseband to inside metal.
  • Muzzle Circumference: Completely around the inside of the muzzle, starting at the noseband.
  • Muzzle Nose Width: Measured from inside metal to inside metal, just past the noseband.
  • Muzzle Cheek Width: Measured from inside metal to inside metal, at the cheek bars.
  • Muzzle Height: Measured from end of felt noseband to inside metal at bottom.

Confirming the fit on your dog:

With the muzzle on the dog:

- Pull the muzzle out and down
- Pull the muzzle out and up

If at some point the muzzle comes off, it’s either too loose or too big. The muzzle should fit comfortably and allow the dog to pant and bark. We also like to be able to pass food rewards to a dog in a muzzle.

How to clean the muzzle nose pad:

Scrub gently with soap and water. Pat dry with a towel and allow to air dry completely.

WARNING

There are several Facebook groups run by well-intentioned people who are telling dog owners to get these HUGE, HUGE muzzles. These folks claim these monster-sized muzzles allow a dog more room to pant, but fail to take several important factors into account. Poorly fitting, oversized muzzles come off far too easily--making this downright dangerous advice, especially if you have a reactive or aggressive dog.

The last thing someone in this position wants or needs is for a muzzle to come off their dog when it is needed the most. Our advice is to be very careful about listening to people who lack experience with aggressive dogs.

I am having a major issue with my 1 year old male Cane Corso viciously attacking my 12 year male Cane Corso. I have tried everything, including, obviously keeping them separate, in hopes (not to sound macabre, because I love both dogs) that when my very old dog passes, it will just be my one year old and my three year old female Corso and everything will be okay. Nothing worked, and there have been some very bad attacks that have happened when I took my eyes off the young one for a second. I am extremely concerned that this may just be any other male dog, that would get this reaction, but for now, I am hoping it is just because they are both in the same home. And my female may be in part, the catalyst. I purchased this muzzle and have had it on the one year old whenever he come into contact with either other dog, and it has kept him from trying to mount the female, and attacking the old male. Thanks Leerberg, for such a beautifully made, effective device. I used your suggestions for training him, with it, and within a few days he has no issues wearing it. Plus he looks pretty cool with it on. Gotta look at the bright side.

I wrote a lengthy review earlier today, but couldn’t add pictures, and evidently I can’t add pictures after the fact, so here you go. Maximus, 1 year old red/black brindle male Cane Corso. He is already 135 lbs. I love the muzzle. Extremely well made, and my dog is wearing it, like doesn’t have it on.
