My 2 dogs were sisters and loved each other. One of them died suddenly, should I get a replacement?
Full Question:
Hello Ed,I adopted 2 german shepherd sisters who were two years old from an animal shelter in 2004. They were so close, the shelter wanted them to stay together. It was a great idea. When I walked them, it was funny to watch how their bodies became one when smelling the ground, etc.
Anyway, Tara, last night died suddenly. I wrapped her in a sheet. Angel, sat next to her practically on top of her and is very, very upset.
They never had a fight and got along so wonderfully the entire 6 years I had them. They loved one another.
Can you give me advice on how to handle Angel. Is it wise to get a replacement?
Thank you,
Jill
Cindy's Answer:
I'm sorry to hear of your loss, please accept our condolences.
I don't know what the right thing to do would be. Sometimes adding a new dog gives the dog left behind another buddy, and fills a void. Other times, they will not accept a new dog and may even be aggressive toward them.
I do know that if you decide to get another dog, I'd recommend a male as you will have a higher chance of success introducing the opposite sex to this situation.
I'd read the article Ed wrote on introducing dogs if you do decide to get a replacement.
