I have a couple questions on spaying & neutering.

Full Question:
Hi Ed,

I'm a customer of yours and I have many of your training DVDs. I have a question for you regarding perhaps both training and just general advice.

I will be getting an 8 week old Czech/DDR female puppy soon, which by virtue of genetics and early testing should be potentially a very hard dog with extremely high prey drive.

Presently, I have a 4 year old GSD, an unneutered and professionally trained male (both obedience and protection), who thankfully is not at all dog aggressive. As an aside, his drive is primarily in defense, which quite frankley doesn't thrill me.

Anyway, Here's are my specific questions.

(1) I do NOT want to neuter my male, unless it's absolutely necessary. I believe that I can keep them crated and away from each other when she goes into heat, until Is it YOUR opinion that I SHOULD neuter him before I get her? Please read on.

(2) Unless YOU advise me differently, I DO intend to have her spayed, but I have been told that I should NOT spay her until she's gone through one or two heats. Is that true, and what would you recommend?

Thanks, Ed.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I would not neuter your male, unless you want to. It’s not necessary.

As for spaying, I am not a fan of this procedure unless you wait until the female is both physically and mentally mature. Usually around 2 years old.
