I adopted a GSD a few months ago and I’m interested in protection sports. What do you do if a dog shows it’s unsuited for a specific sport like IPO/IGP?

Full Question:
I adopted a GSD about three months ago. He is about a year old, and arrived emaciated, and an anxiety disorder that left him chasing and yelping for his tail, and when caught, proceeded to bite it bloody. Your content, including media and prose, provided tools that perhaps saved this dog’s life. Thank you.

I have gained a strong interest for protection sports, and would like to introduce my dog to it. I am unsure of the distance we will reach, but our determination is unwavering. I noticed Mr. Frawley had a number of dogs shown by the “Meet our Staff” page. My question is what do professional trainers, like Mr. Frawley or Mr. Ellis, do when a dog retires or a dog begins to show signs it is unsuited for a specific sport? I have read articles from the Leerburg site that discourages owning numerous dogs, so I felt asking the expert’s advice might clarify the question.

My second question is, do you have any cinderella stories, that involve IPO?

Thank you for your time
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Thank you for writing and thank you for your business. Your dog is sure a lucky guy!

Every dog trainer is different so there really is not a set answer to your question about a retired dog. I keep my dogs for the duration of their lives once they retire. My current retired sport dog, Rush, is 12 ½ . If I get a dog and they show me that my chosen sport isn't a good match for them I will often either find the dog a home or keep them as a part of our family or I will find an activity that suits that dog and work on that.

I don't have any cinderella stories for you, sorry!

I'm going to add a link to a short video we did with Michael Ellis explaining the order in which you should view the videos if you have a specific goal in mind. What Order Should I watch Michael Ellis DVDs?

You may also want to check out the 3 day workshop we had here at Leerburg, we filmed the entire thing and it's now available online through our university. I've linked that below.
User Response:
This website, you, Frawley and Ellis have been concrete guides, and I am honored, starstruck, to have received your feedback. I will utilize your personal experience upon deciding, and plan to do the Ellis workshop. Thank you for being such a great and clear resource for the craft.

Cheers!
