Can I use a remote collar on my 16 week old German Shepherd?

Full Question:
I have pick of the litter male German Shepherd. Using your training techniques with streaming. Still having bad habits and getting worse. Daily training by me, leashed but free time, no responses to No, Come, and runs, bites, etc. Basically incorrigible and I’m pretty firm and had breed in the past. Is he too young for E-Collar? I’ve been watching your free videos on the collars. Advice?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
What are your training goals with your pup? Will he be a working dog, family companion, are you planning on any type of competitive activities with him?

Are you using marker training and food rewards? Puppies are basically like small kids and I'm not a fan of using physical or e-collar corrections for what is normal puppy behavior. I don't use e-collars to teach behaviors, I use them when a dog is older to reinforce behaviors my dog is already doing so I can eventually have him off-leash.

I see you have our puppy video, I might suggest teaching him the recall and the foundation basic behaviors using food. Puppies can be challenging and frustrating but if you look at it from their point of view it makes it clear that they are just learning how the world works. Investing the time into teaching engagement and teaching the puppy how to learn is more valuable long term than adding corrective tools like e-collars or prong collars at such a young age. It can definitely be more work for us in the short term but it will pay off by creating a dog that wants to work with us because they are our training partner and they enjoy the process. We just have to break down the training into small sessions (sometimes a minute here or there) and build on the little successes.

There are people that use e-collars on puppies but I don't recommend it.
User Response:
I understand. I’m using marker training with food. Training for no more than 3 minutes 3 to 4 times daily as video recommended. He’s training well but I have a farm and big pond and let him run and play. Developing bad inside habits and is extremely, extremely stubborn. Using ex-pens and all advice from videos. I’m also reluctant about e-collars and mostly had no leash dogs on the farm. No fences. He’s going to be different but will continue using your training approach. Thanks for the tips!
