I'm getting a puppy soon and the breeder told me that he has an umbilical hernia, would you still consider getting that pup or not?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy, I‘m about to get a male puppy in 2 weeks and the breeder told me now that the pup has a small umbilical hernia which is not congenital. Would you still consider getting the puppy or not?
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
It would depend on the breed and the size of the hernia. Many times they resolve as the pup grows but if you have any concerns I would have a pre-purchase exam done and ask the vet about it.
User Response:
Thank you for your quick response. The puppy is a German Shepherd and the breeder says it is not large and should close on its own. Would you still recommend a vet visit before purchase or rather not?
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Small hernias often do close as the puppy grows.

Does your breeder have a vet check the litter out before they go to new homes? When we were breeding we had the vet come over between 7-8 weeks and do a physical for all the pups and for those that were flying, issue a health certificate.

If not, I think it's up to you whether you have a vet check it out or not.
User Response:
Cindy, Thank you very much for your help.
