Pets: | Thunder - GSD Mobility Service Dog trained by VetDogs at the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, NY. Born in 2010 Amy - Rescue from shelter at 3 YO in 2003. Shepherd Bird Dog Mutt. Boo - Mancoon Cat Squirrel - Persian Cat |
About Me: | I was a Marine Biologist/Chemist who ended up working in Chemical Safety at a US DOE research facility. I voc rehabed after my military career. 2.5 years in a military hospital and 4 years learning to walk again, 10 years to get back into normal. I am now unemployable and 100% disabled from injuries I sustained in the military as well as work. I have been all over the world. Right now I am just trying to make it day by day and my GSD Service Dog Thunder helps me out. Most of the time I am alone and Thunder makes sure I am OK and has helped me more than I could have ever imagined. I am missing part of my Right Leg, and have other major injuries to my back, etc. Thunder keeps me steady and helps so much. Thunder is a mobility service dog. He helps me up stairs, walking everywhere, picks things up for me, gets the remote, etc. He does so many things it is hard to explain. I got him trained from the Guide Dog Foundation that also supports VetDogs. VetDogs are special dogs to help veterans that need mobility support due to loss of limbs, brain injuries, and other physical disabilities. They do so much more than that. Thunder wakes me up if I am having a bad nightmare. He makes sure I get out of bed, and gets me out of the house. He helps me travel on my own by plane, train, etc. I could never do these things without Thunder. Please support VetDogs as a charity. I believe it saves some guys lives. 8 veterans a day commit suicide because they can't deal with their disabilities. Due to the successful use of tourniquets in the recent wars we have more wounded than dead, but they are missing limbs, need prosthetics, and a VetDog goes a long way to help them out. You will see more of them around these days. Think about sponsoring a puppy for them or contributing to the cause. You love dogs, and Veterans need dogs to love them. |
