What brand of monthly flea/tick preventive do you find to be best? Is over the counter as good as the vet's brand Frontline?

Personally I don't use anything on either of my dogs here and don't have a problem.... of course we have two seasons here, Winter, and the Fourth of July, so it really isn't like the rest of the US.
I have used both Frontline and Advantage in the past when I lived in a less frigid climate and they are both comparable. I liked that frontline is bi-monthly and also covers ticks.
I really hesitate to premedicate any conditions including fleas. If you have them, then by all means treat for them, but if not, why mess with it?
So far as the Hartz stuff goes, stay away from it. I had dogs come in for grooming that had been treated with it and still had fleas AND had this nice nasty greasy spot on their necks. I have heard good things about bio spot, but have no experience with it that I know of.

Hi Pamela,
I don't know what region you live in, but here where I live, flea infestation can happen to anyone in a hurry, who doesn't use SOMETHING. And, the ticks have been particularly nasty this year. I have always used Frontline on the advice of my vet, because it covers both fleas and ticks, and is waterproof. My dog spends a lot of time outdoors, and loves to swim, so this is important to me. Since I have been using it on all of my pets, they have been flea free. I used to use shampoos and flea combs, natural products, etc., but found those things to be ineffective. The Frontline works. I have never tried any other top-spot products such as Advantage, Bio Spot, etc., as I am happy with Frontline.

I use Sentinal. It's for fleas, worms and heartworm. I live in Southern Ontario. We're told to start in June through to November. I do not follow the package instructions but give my dog 1 pill for every 1- 1/2 to 2 months. I also use Mela Miracle Premium Pet Shampoo. (see post under dog shampoos) It contains tea tree oil, a natural insect repellant. My dog has never had fleas or ticks.
My fear of fleas or heartworm is greater than my dislike of medicating my dog.

I use a combination of Interceptor and Frontline- being in the woods alot we get alot of ticks so I try to protect the dogs as much as possible, and the frontline does this and is waterproof. The Interceptor takes care of the heartworm and the intestinal parasites, but I dont use the Sentinal, unless I get it for free, which does happen occasionally, because all it does is sterilize the adult flea so they cant reproduce,it does not kill the flea so they can still be living on your dog and biting your dog, and you.

So, does that mean you think Frontline is better? I have never seen my dog bothered by fleas in all the years that we've been using other products. Please let me know. He's due at the vet this week for his yearly heartworm test and I usually pick up the medication then.
Thanks.

If you have had success stay with the Sentinal, I did not mean to imply that it was bad. Its certainly not. I guess it is a personal preferance of mine. I would rather the dog not get bit by the flea at all and if the Frontline is killing the fleas then that kind of solves the breeding problem.
Interceptor and Sentinal are made by the same company the Sentinal is just the Interceptor combined with Program.
I will always use Frontline, for the ticks, gotta have tick protection, on each outing I pull 3 off of me and maybe one every other week off my dog. I have been told I could use one of those Preventic collars and that they work really well but you cant have them aorund cats as it will kill the cat, and anything that is that toxic is NOT going around my dogs neck.
To make a long answer sahort- do what has worked for you, dont fix something if its not broken, and a million other cliches, but dont forget the tick protection.

Thanks. I will discuss Frontline and a few other things with my vet this week. I don't believe in any type of flea/insect coller either. I have heard of too many reactions to them. In fact, the husky next door had a bad one. The skin on his neck opened up. He had to have his whole neck shaved and needed daily applications of a medicated cream.
Since my dog has never exhibited any sign of a flea bite allergy I'll probably stay with Sentinal. To tell you the truth, I haven't even been able to tell if he's ever been bit by fleas. He's never seemed bothered, and (thank God!) I've never had them in the house.

I live in WI which product should I use or shouldn't I really have to worry about fleas and ticks. Last year I didn't use anything and was fine?
Thanks
