I'm looking for ideas and known cures for shedding and dry itchy skin. My dogs are on a raw diet which includes fresh beef parts, organ meat, tripe, and various chicken parts plus supplements. I have not given them any Salmon oil in a while but need too. I'm looking for something to supplement the Salmon oil with like a guaranteed NO SHED coat and skin conditioner??? Is there anything on the market that really does what it claims to do??? My dogs are in the warm house more than they are outside. I'm sure part of the problem with their skin is the dry heat in the house. There are literally tons of stuff on the net that claim to work but I need some proven success stories so I can make a decision.
I recommend Feed Sentials Supplement for K9 and Sh-Emp Oil. These compliment each other very well. What supplement are you using now? There are many environmental factors which would influence your dogs skin & coat on top of the dietary. There is nothing on the market that will 'stop' shedding altogether, it is a natural process and must take place... however certainly a balanced diet made with quality ingredients combined with high quality supplements (like the Feed Sentials) will dramatically improve the dogs skin & coat (amongst other things)... further to this regular brushing provides huge benefits as does a good fitness program. All of these contribute to the overall health of your dog. Always look at the whole picture, not just the symptom.
I've use Furminator system products an have been happy with the results. It's has a shampoo, conditioner/anti-shed solution and a grooming brush. I'm not sure if the shampoo/coditioner really do anything but the brush works gread on undercoat. I also like the smell of the bathing products. As far as the humidity in the house--you might want to get an air humidifier for your house, or start giving your dogs more oil in their diet. Or even using a good quality conditioner if you don't go the furminator rout. I hope this helps <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I didn't know it was possible to have a no-shed GSD.........I hope to hear some answers about this. I *think* they shed ----- period ----- twice a year for the undercoat and all year for the topcoat.
However, lots of brushing works well for me with both long- and short-haired shedding dogs, and I think you'll see a *huge* improvement with distilled fish oil. I use it for me and my dogs. It helps with inflammation (of all kinds), allergies, and most definitely with the canine itchy-scratchies. Can you add some fish to the diet, too? That's been discussed here, so I'll just bring it up as a reminder. BTW, I believe it's as important to choose the low-mercury fish for the dogs as it is for ourselves. There are lots of charts on the internet, and many stores have signs.
I think you'll see improvement within two weeks when you start feeding fish oil. At least, that's my own experience.
For amounts, I use the bottle recommendation (for humans) and assume they mean a 150-pound person, and adjust it accordingly.
For the brushing, make sure you use one that does not scratch the skin (I use a nylon rake that works pretty well - like everything I do to my dogs, including hte ecollar, I tried it on me first to make sure it would not irritate the skin). Pulling out any dead undercoat REALLY seems to help.
Concerning the room temp. If you can keep it as cool as you can tolerate and humidify (but make sure you don't introduce mold) both good things for YOU and your dog.
